How highly do you rate Spink's win over Cooney?

    That's true but if he'd been facing a couple of these guys a month may have gotten his confidence and timing back. He had to much time on his hands and let the demons fill his head. For such a big strong guy cooney was apparently very vulnerable and fragile .

    I agree. He had the best thing a fighter can have crushing power in his left hook and he was fast enough. He just didn't do what guys like Hearns or Duran would do. come back and try again and get better. I think for his marketability in 1982 the promoters should have had him win a title against Weaver and gain a little more experience because Holmes in my mind really outclassed him. A little more experience would have worked well for Gerry, and then he would have been able to land the left hook on guys like Holmes or Foreman or Spinks. his left hook was a great punch.

    That's absolutely terrible if true... drinking that heavily and being unable to separate your career and your pleasures....

    Cooney was a mighty opponent, it was a great win for spinks.
