How highly do you rate Tommy Loughran?

Pretty good for a white guy in a white world only fighting other white guys !

 

I asked you which top class black guys could he have met at 175lbs ? You did not respond.

Also when he moved up into the heavyweight division in the early 1930s, he could have fought george godfrey, john henry lewis, tiger jack fox, larry gains, al gainer, ed bearcat wright just to name a few

 

For me the timelines are not quite right here.

Norfolk and Godfrey were falling away from title contention around the time that Loughran became a pivotal player in their respective weight classes.

Flowers and Wright fall within the timeline, but is it possible that these fights simply didn't happen?

I wouldn't say that. Loughran was taking on Gene Tunney, Harry Greb, Mike Mctigue, Jeff Smith from 1922-1923. Surely he could have fought Kid Norfolk once in those 2 years, especially since he was rated higher.

Tommy Lougran entered the heavyweight picture in 1929. George Godfrey was rated in the top 5 in 1929 and 1930. He continued to be the coloured heavyweight champ until 1933. Larry Gains was a top player in the heavyweight division throughout Loughran's time in the heavyweight division.

There was also Tiger Jack Fox and John Henry Lewis. Both were a step above Bearcat Wright in there primes. Not to mention the hundreds of negro fringe contenders who were talented but were never given the chance because of the color of their skin.

I replied to this before the timescales were wrong.
As to Tommy v Carnera, Primo had 84 lbs on him.
Gains after easily beating Carnera, lost the same year to Neusel and was stopped by McKorkindale the followowing year..Gains was 200 lbs to Louhgran's 184lbs .
Loughran was fighting heavyweights from 1929 Lewis did not turn pro till 1930.
Bearcat Wright was beaten by Walker, whom Loughran beat.
Loughran went where the money was.

Tommy dodged all those" Black Tigers" so he could take on patsies like.

Fighting a black fighter back then neither brought you big dollars nor big recognition with the people who count. I don´t punish a fighter at the time who did not fight a black fighter if he wasn´t clearly ducking him - and I haven´t seen any evidence that Loughran did - but I do reward fighters who took on black fighters despite it beeing high risk fights.

 

McVey, or what ? Your going to start one of your endless , hair splitting threads that avoid the facts ... Loughran fought for over 22 years in over three major weight classes ... you actually take the position that there were no talented black fighters from 160 - heavyweight in that generation time period that deserved a match up ... if you believe this your'rea dunce. If your simply defending him you should be embarrassed.

Here I was only joking ... he was a great fighter ... I cannot rate him all time because of color line but no doubt he was great ... Let's leave it at that ... defenses and excuses like the one you are attempting will not be taken seriously ...

In all fairness, Mcvey, Loughran knew his actions would one day get him reamed in the Internet forums. He made his bed and now he can lay in it. Well, not now he can't but you know what I mean.

 

Why didn't loughran fight tiger jack fox?

Why didnt loughran take on kid norfolk in 1922-1923?
