I only really got into boxing just before the calzaghe lacy fight the build up to that fight got me gripped! But what was the the thoughts on here and amongst boxing fans did they really think that lacy was the next big thing??? ITV s build up coverage was making out that that lacy was a killer then gary shaw was saying the same''168 pound mike tyson'' the bookies had lacy the favourite also! So when cal destroyed him the way he did i was blown away and completely hooked..... But was lacy all hype or did calzaghe really ruin what could of been? honest answers because its easy to look back now and say you knew what was going to happen!!!
The entire Showtime hype machine was behind him full force as was Ring Magazine, trying to build him and Jermain Taylor both into the new superstars of boxing. He was also considered a world beater by American fans, but to a lesser extent based on his jaded performance against Sheika. Like a lot of people I thought he had a chance to build up a good resume in that crowded 168 pound class but I never thought he was a potential atg. Despite being touted as some kind of picturesque, unholy one punch knockout artist his style was always too clumsy and methodical to catch on and make him a sensation like Tyson. He was still a decent fighter. Syd Vanderpool, Sheika, and Robin Reid were solid top 10 guys.
Far too ****ing highly. Just take a look at how Calzaghe was able to dine out on schooling him. A bit like saying Grant Holt is the new Van Basten.
GJE thank you for providing that link I always knew Lacy was overhyped but some of those guys think he's the second coming. I believe that article says it all considering how the fight turned out deal:deal This was my highlight quote: Jason Petock:"Making a somewhat educated guess here, I'm going for Jeff ‘Left Hook’ Lacy by KO in the 2nd round. I think his sheer strength and onslaught is going to overwhelm the Welshman and leave him treading water for survival without a life vest. "
He was favourite against Joe and was kicking ass all the way until that night in Manchester , great atmosphere. I had pretty good seats too.
What i never understood was if he was the next superstar - why did he come UK to fight? must have got one helluva purse. was he not a ticket seller in the states?
he was 'mini mike tyson' and 'unbeatable' before calzaghe...unfortunatley the crash means we cant pull these posts up as it seems today americans pretend nobody rated him.
Theres been loads of new mike tysons, and they never deliver. its because joe was considered crap that people thought lacy would win. consider, joe had a run of terrible opponents and had hidden in the UK for ages, of course you'd expect him to lose.
Before he was destroyed by zaggy = mini Tyson. One of the best p4p punches in the world. After zaggy destruction... He was never that good.....lol
if you remember i created the ''calzaghe will annihilate jeff lacy'' thrhead which was about 100 pages before the crash (slight exageration), pre fight their wasnt an american in the house that didnt think lacy would win by ko, we heard it all 'calzaghes a bum, lacy hits to hard, next mike tyson, future p4p' we heard it all, i just wish i could get the thread back because nowadays people act like it never happened.
he WAS RATED HIGHLY BUT HAD A LOT OF STRENGTHS, When he got in the ring with Calzage you could see he never faced a fighter with such skill and ability to adapt. I seen it again with JC against Kessler and B-Hop, he adapted well to both and the pace of Calzage was tremendous, it was the body shot that made Kessler honest and the pace was getting to B-Hop and he was starting to get hurt thus the fake foul act. Lacy was a very good fighter but he was mentally ruined in his one-sided loss to Calzage and was truly never the same guy
He was overhyped on both sides of the pond but Joe delivered the perfect performance that night, he was amazing.Great display of precision, speed and timing.
