the funniest thing was the end of the 2nd (i think) where joe is in the corner with his dad saing ''he's ****, he's ****, he cant hit ****'' ....and that was after 2 rounds...this 'future atg' was getting laughed at.
Think that fight made Joe finally believe in himself, should have sorted his **** out earlier really.
the european supermiddles where the titlists. calzaghe/beyer where older fighters who where hometown favourites. lacy i think was planning on campaigning for a year to collect the belts. also lacy fought in wales and the M.E.N. arena before. it was a fight that lacys team had been planning on for a while. and i think it was going to be hard to get joe out of wales or the border towns of britain in general. so might aswell get familiar to his surroundings and not be cut off and stagnate your career just jump straight in. they had the confidence and the self belief. sort of similar to how michael nunn was at eubank-benn II looking to get the winner. as it was a draw. he had to reshcedule the event booking so had a fight planned against steve little....which backfired HARD.
Yes, he was tipped as the next big thing, a mini Tyson, that would KO Calzaghe. Joe destroyed him, took his soul, and he was never the same again. Lacy was overrated, but was not half the fighter he was after the Calzaghe bout. Who know what could have happened to him if he chose to stay away from the No.1 super middleweight of all time.
I think it was Gary Shaw who said "when Jeff Lacy steps through those ropes i see a 168pound Mike Tyson".
He was a very, very good fighter in his prime. Total powerhouse. What was amazing was HOW Calzaghe beat him...he didn't just outbox him...he fought into Lacy's game, and was just the better fighter...he'd hit him with 3-4 punches, and just pivot under Lacy's shots. Made him look absolutely clubfighter.
lacy also had a rotator cuff injury on his left arm so....i dont think it was a completely "calzaghe ruined him" his main weapon his ****ing namesake dissappeared. he was very overhyped but the hype did have soem basis. i can't think of a present example. maybe chavez. but even he showed some world class class. lacy just seemed to never improve or create a plan b. just shuffle foreward and throw the left hook and a clubbing overhand right.
Laughing at all the tards here who are now laughing at those who had Lacy high. Like THEY knew better...
I was disgusted how media made the comparisons to Tyson when he fought nothing like him just abunch of hayemakers. I was really more interested in Taylor vs Lacy when both were in their primes and undefeated I wanted JT to expose him, but I will admit I was impressed by Calzaghe, but not surprised. Not the biggest, strongest, fastest, youngest fighter out there, but Calzaghe had balls he went toe to toe with anyone. His conditioning was freakish.
I don't remember him being touted nearly as highly by the common fan. In fact, the Joe Cal fight wasn't even in prime time here in the States if I remember correctly. We had genuine stars like ODLH, Mosley, and Mayweather. Neither of Lacy or Joe ever held a candle to them. Of course, I'm sure some pundits went off the deep end. It happens everywhere. Remember when talking heads said Hatton stood a chance against Mayweather?
in retrosepct the real reason I feel a sucker is for being conned into thinking this was a decent fight. Due to the mismatch, it is the most exciting Calzaghe fight to date, given that a lot of his fights are terrible workrate jobs versus gassing opponents and early ref-aided tkos.
