How highly would you rate GGG if he were to beat Canelo (officially)?

it would elevate him. longevity counts when assessing a body of work. he would be defeating a p4p fighter at an age where most fighters are done at the top, and when many people see him as past prime, including myself.

The problem is that none of Canelos top wins failed tests.
And that his best wins are Trout and Lara which both are good but nowhere near great winsand Cotto who was 20lbs lighter than canelo, 10 years older and had taken enough punishment in his career to get brain damage 3x over and all 3 fights had dodgy scorecards.

I think p4p even that old version of Cotto was a much better fighter considering Canelo looked atleast 2 full divisions bigger and it was still a 7-5 in rounds kind of fight. Put 35 year old Canelo who's taken several Savage beatings against a roided up natural LHW and he gets embarrassed badly.

I actually like Canelos style much more than GGGs and I like watching him more but he's nothing more than a good but not elite fighter with ALOT of marketing because he's good looking. That's all.
Beating Canelo is huge for GGGs wallet and his popularity but his actual standing as a fighter shouldn't change that much.

Canelo was never even clearly the best fighter in the 154 division. When his competition was non HOF competition like trout and Lara. Im not even sure Canelo could have beaten Cotto if the fight happened 2-3 years sooner before Canelo turned into hulk and Cotto had a little more left.

I would be more impressed by a BJS win, the Jacobs win was good let's see a rematch.

If either guy but especially Golovkin OUTBOXES the other and wins convincingly I'll regard him much higher than I currently do. But if GGG knocks out Canelo no matter how devastating it looks no I won't rate him higher. He needs to show he's good enough to overcome his evident vulnerabilities. He has to show he's good enough to avoid getting outboxed like he did against Jacobs and Canelo the first time, and likely would be outboxed by Saunders and Lara.

    what, 2014-2018?

its very good, a sign of elite, but HoF? A bit more is needed, something that stands out as making him famous. Perhaps this intradivisional clash, deciding who is king of 2 divisions, will be it.

i tihn his HoF status needs something "famous"

    :beer-toast1: Yep
So only a TKO or KO , which I just can’t see as Big Red is solid, would elevate GGG to me

Helps the resume out to no end. Though he already did in my eyes, so it doesn't change TOO much. To repeat the feat at a slightly older age is even better, I suppose

I would rate him 5% higher because he's 1 year older than he was when they last fought, and he beat him comfortably last time around

He'd have to knock him out for it to really impact his legacy. Canelo has an excellent skillset, chin and happens to be the biggest name/draw in boxing (at least in the US). Stopping him would be pretty terrific legacy wise.

At the moment i have him just outside my top 10 middleweights of all time, if he beats Canelo in spectacular fashion he would be in my top 10 because i rate Canelo very highly.
