If he’d done his comeback and beat Tyson he’s undeniably the king, If he’d put a little more into it he’d have beaten Evander.

I don’t think he would have beaten holy at that stage. Evander at times looked like he was messing with Holmes and still won that fight about 10 rounds to 2. But yeah if he had upset Tyson OR holy it would have been huge

He would have been a real, unified champ who met the best threats of his day, instead of a guy who ducked, bragged, proliferated rather than unifed titles, and ultimately lost to a cherry pick gone wrong.

It's been a bit but I had it something like 8/12 for Holy. Lot of close rounds depending how you judge it, Maybe It needs a rewatch though.

I can't believe so many people have him at #3! That's absolutely absurd for someone who to my knowledge even faced his number one contender (I think Cooney was #1 WBC off the top of my head).

Yeah it's high. He had longevity and consistency tho. You can argue him anywhere from #3 to the bottom of the 10 i think depending on criteria.

I have given this some thought but not in the way your are presenting it. It Holmes subbed in the Young and had a chance to fight either Foreman and Ali instead of him, we might have a clear case for the #1 over all rated heavyweight. Ponder that!

In terms of legacy i rank him about 4-5. Below Foreman but surely above Lewis and Frazier.
If he beats all this fighters in his title reign he would rise to 2-3 for me. If he additionally manages to regain the title from Spinks or later in the 90s i would rank him above Louis. Maybe a tie with Ali.

I'd move him from #3 to #2, above Louis but below Ali.

Not really. All were inconsistent fighters with short primes and other than Tate came after Holmes was past his best anyway.

It would in my opinion make his case for #3 really hard to beat. I don't think he moves up to 2 or 1 in my book. Now if he had won either the Tyson or Holyfield fights I'd move him up
