Does anyone think that boxing may start to move away from Vegas? It's all about making money and if they can't fill a casino then what? We have had a few fights over here during the last 18 months or so at 2am, to appease the American audience. Also, we generally fill stadia/arenas where a lot of cash is generated. Promotion these days is easy due to access to satellite/cable TV, internet and so on and reliable, live satellite links ensure anyone in the world can watch the action. Therefore, will the UK ever become a Mecca of boxing??
It depends really. I think the intense home advantage for British fighters might turn people away (often I don't even see there being an advantage for American fighters except that it's a little easier for them to travel there) and there could be problems with the hooliganism that could plague certain fights. It's up in the air though, boxing is doing so strong there it'd be hard to picture it not taking a more important role.
BTW, I read the post for what it is....how hyped is Vegas (as a boxing town), rather than how hyped is Vegas for the upcoming fight (which what was meant)! Sorry! Maybe my take should be made a new thread?
I live in Vegas also, and I haven't seen **** except for one hugh billboard on the 15 near Rusell and Trop. No hype at all, but if was Roy vs Cal it might have been different
Absolutely Not. Vegas is the fight capital of the world. Vegas isn't worried about filling hotel rooms during fight night. There are other avenues to make money. As long as the people that travel spend at the casinos than there will continue to be fights in Vegas. As for the UK being a mecca of boxing. the cost of living and generally higher costs to travel in the UK and spend will prevent most fans outside of the UK from going to watch a fight. Vegas just has better things to offer other than watching a boxing fight afterwards. I think as long as the UK turns out decent fighters, they will be ok. Its the Frank Warrens and the shotty refereeing that may keep the UK from being a boxing mecca.
I think Boulder might have it, they usually have all the fights and maybe Samtowns, because I know they have Wrestling events so why not boxing. I usually oreder all fights and watch him, ro stay out the casinoes. But what sucks is I'm going to the Jay-z concert with my fiancee and trust me I would rather see this fight. But thanks for DVR
Fair comments and I agree with you. My only concern is that the majority of Americans wouldn't come here (or anywhere else) if you could get £50 to the dollar. My point is, why bring boxing to those who really aren't too bothered with it (not everyone, i know), when there are many nations where the sport thrives, who could fill a stadium for every big fight? I am sure that many British fans wouldn't like to see boxing finished in Vegas as it can combine a great sporting event with a great holiday.
I think a lot of people are scared of the biases that each country would haveif it were to be held in a hometown fight. (Believe me, Hopkins will not have the hometown advantage for this fight) The Nevada Athletic Commision is one of the strictest when it comes to having a fair fight. They make sure the fight is fair from a fighter's standpoint and that fines, penalties are dished out. I can't say for sure about other countries who have a strong fanbase. Economically for promoters you have to think that the more seats there are, the cheaper you have to sell the tickets. (supply demand) Las Vegas has 3 venues at roughly the same scale to tighten the supply. The only logical case that you bring up about crowd scales that made sense American wise was when Arum was flirting with the idea of having the Pac-Morales III fight outside in a football arena here in Vegas. At maximum capacity with standing room only, that would be about 40,000 max. and I'm guessing
Jesus H...Jay Z will be in town..a boxing fight...a UFC fight this weekend..man, there is going to be some prime ***** out here this weekend.
If I live in Vegas, I will be there on each Big time fight weigh-in. It's free & you have a chance to see & Mingle with Boxing Personalities.
I'll be going to jay-z concert at the MGM tonight. A van halen concert at the Mandlay bay. A comedy show is tonight. B-hop after party at poerty in Ceasers. Every night club should be crackin and the strip should be crazy but it's real windy right know
