How important is it for a fighter to cultivate a public image?

So there are some obvious examples of fighters who have enjoyed financial success which is far greater then their ability would suggest, and conversely there are guys who should be amongst the top earners in the sport but cant get a good payday.

You'd have to say that a guy like Derek Chisora has given himself far more opportunities in his career than he really deserved just by being an interesting and controversial character.

The sport is littered with fighters though who should be raking it in, but they just don't have the personality to sell a big fight.
Rigondeaux, Ward and perhaps even Tim Bradley to some extent would fall into this category.

Guys lke GGG and Kovalev are able to sell fights without being particularly extroverted because their fights are exciting enough on their own.

So what does a boxer have to do if he is a brilliant technician, but not necessarily a knockout artist if he wants to get ahead?
