When we look at the career of Gene Tunney, how good his chin was, then take in to consideration that Dempsey was at the end of the line.. Then just how bloody good was Jack scoring that kd over him!
Quite impressive. The fact we have film of him post prime - against two men that both look very good on film on multiple filmed performances in Tunney and Sharkey and Jack was able to drop one in a losing effort and stop another albeit controversially in the other - but seemed to be getting competitive in that fight shows he was the real deal.
I always believed Tunney could of beaten the count and I do believe Tunney’s style would of always presented problems for Jack. Tunney did take 19 of their 20 rounds. But Jack was so inactive going into the first fight and looked so old. Jack in his prime closes the distance quicker and I think finishes Tunney.
Who were all of the heavyweight punchers Tunney faced to prove he had a great chin at HW? In one of his fights with Greb the only thing that saved him from going down was the ropes and Greb was no puncher. Im not saying Tunney didnt have a good chin but many question the lack of depth of his heavyweight resume. Fair enough but while fighting very few heavyweights he fought even fewer heavyweight punchers.
Yes, I just watched it a few days ago, and I thought the same. But 4 and 7 were the only rounds I gave him. I too thought Tunney won every round that I have seen on film of the first fight.
i just rewatched round 4. It’s plausible to give him the round. He does start off with a big hook to the face against the ropes and he lands two additional good hooks and even a Jab. Tunney did close the round strong though and it even looked like Dempsey snuck a head butt in there towards the end. I def could give him that round. Nobody dominated but Dempsey looked like he landed the heavier shots
You are correct in your assertion that Gene didn't fight many hard/big punchers in his career, strange then that he is considered to have had a " good " chin, I mean it wasn't bad , but not in the same league as Chuvalo, Gavilan, Greb, Palomino, etc, also I lean towards a Dempsey victory if the fight was circa 18/20 the Dempsey of this period was a very formidable fighter, moreover he was still a vicious and snarling HW, by the time he fought Gene he was somewhat civilised, what with the plastic surgery, mixing with the gentry, and living the good life, no riding underneath trains, so fairly ripe for the picking. stay safe buddy.
I agree. To me how he managed to perform in the Sharkey and second Tunney fight to me show more about what might have been for Dempsey that any filmed victory.
His performance in the Sharkey fight was very good all things considered - but I personally can’t credit him for the KO - it was preceded an obvious low blow - and the last head shot, the left hook, didn’t put Sharkey out - he was still clutching at his groin with knees drawn up when he was on the deck. After 17 rounds of virtual domination I guess Gene got caught napping - not to discredit Dempsey, it was a sweet combination. Maybe per rep as a puncher, it might’ve been expected that those punches would’ve kept Tunney down. Impossible to say, but I tend to believe Tunney probably could’ve risen prior to an even 10 seconds - but once on his feet he might’ve been that much more vulnerable than he was when he did actually arise. Of course in the very next round Tunney dropped Jack. Albeit a flash KD in so far as Dempsey’s quick arising - it was still a solid KD.
