And it’s good it was the same thing. No one can dig back and catch you out for being inconsistent. I’ve said this before also - there should be a statute of limitations where, after 1 year, you’re allowed to give your own posts a “like”. I look back on some of my old posts and think, my God, that was GOLD! Joking (well, not really).
1. The video you've posted is the 2nd fight. 2. Saying Tunney had Dempsey on the verge of a KO is a gross exaggeration.
I didn't notice they said it was the first fight despite both of them mentioning it. I said he had Dempsey on flimsy legs, which he absolutely did, go to 11:41 when Tunney hits Dempsey with a right hand to the head and listen to the commentator. At 11:52 check Dempsey's legs, they almost fail him, so they became flimsy but he held through.
Regarding Dempsey vs Sharkey in fact Dempsey was leading on two of the three official scorecards after six rounds. The ref saw the body blow prior to the ko blow and stated: “The punch prior to the knockout blow, which was a left hook to the jaw, was a fair one landing at the beltline but not below”. The fight doctor examined Sharkeys groin after the bout and saw no signs of any low blows. There is a second film of the count I believe from Pathe. Different angle. That film shows Sharkey trying to get up but his arms and body not responding. He does not appear at that angle to be clutching at his groin. I also found a second film clip of the three body blows, different angle but incredibly this clip really provided no additional insight to these blows except underlying they were three right uppercuts thrown with tremendous ferocity.
I found it on the chronicling America newspaper archive. It was within a side article rather than the major article that covered the fight details. Perhaps this is why it’s never cited. I’d need to look for it again. It’s the only reference I’ve ever seen regarding the official scoring.
Here you go. Took a while to find it. https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/...asetext=&andtext=&dateFilterType=range&page=3
I’ve never read that as the official scoring. A specific writers/reporters opinion perhaps. This is why I’ve always LOOKED for the official scoring when completing research. Here I found it.
I don't credit Dempsey for the Sharkey KO itself, but take away the controversial ending, his body shots were starting to get to the Gob with eight full rounds to go. Sharkey doesn't reach the final bell. A longer bout would've been better preparation for Tunney II, but Gene was still improving and had analyzed Dempsey well. While I think Toledo Dempsey would've beaten the peak Tunney of the Heeney career finale, we don't know how much better Gene would've gotten had he continued on. But he was too initiatory and busy for Schmeling, and too cool, disciplined and smart for Sharkey. Gene missed a jab in mid ring as Jack canted his head to the left and slammed over a stunner right to Tunney's temple from the other side to begin the knockdown sequence. I think Toledo Dempsey does that repeatedly, and that would be too much for Gene.
While I didn't have Dempsey ahead, I do find the narrative that Sharkey was winning this fight running away, is a bit overblown, Dempsey's body blows were catching up to Sharkey regardless, and he was expending to much energy trying to keep Dempsey off of him.
Gene Tunney was down for more time than a normal referee 10 count would use up, so that was pretty impressive. Sonny Liston was counted out against Miuhammad Ali under very similar circumstances.
Similar to Dempsey Tunney 2. I’ve never located the official scoring but I did find 98% of the live radio broadcast. The announcer at ringside had the bout even after six rounds so it was even after eight. After 8 rounds “both men were unmarked except for welts on Tunneys body”.
