Theres a lot of discusions about "who is the biggest puncher?.. etc" but would you mind to share your info, ideas whatever it is, as to "how this thing is measured?" Some said its by PSI (lb./square inch) some by instanteneous force computation but those things are theoritical for me. Was there really developed a scientific gadget that measures a punch?

According to the metric system, power has to be measured by the combination of force in Newtons and speed in m/s which results in Watts or energy per unit of time ( Joules/second). This should be enough to say that a big punch should not have only "weight" but also speed - flashy and strong at the same time - obviously, there are non-scientifical perspectives on the subject such as the proper balance, leverage, accuracy, technique, snap... It should always be subjective to mention who is the bigger puncher if you do not consider the action by its result - the impact, the knockout. I say the biggest punchers are always guys who have high rates of KOs in their records, regardless of the disparity in opposition between different fighters to be compared. Guys like Julian Jackson, Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Sonny Liston, MAB, Jones, Pavlik and so on.

not just about power, accuracy of the punch play just an important role.

By using this theory all baseball players that are tremendous home run hitters should all be knock out artists because they have speed-strenght and weight behind there swing which could be used as the same principle as a punch.

The fact that the thread is called 'how is a punch measured' and you've tried to describe how reach is measured and yet even got that wrong means you fail sir.

If they rigged up the fighters with a lot of sensors, and they took high speed, high quality video at the right angles they could probably estimate it, but I don't think they've ever done that in a real fight.

Other wise they could do those heavy bag PSI (force/area) tests but those only account for the fighter's raw potential and won't translate well to what the opponent (trying to move away from the punch) would experience.

Yeah when boxing fans are using the term "power" they are not using it in the correct way technically as far as measurements go. Really a punch would be measured in Joules or whatever other energy. Power is continuous energy like running or biking. A punch is just a one time movement so it should be measured in Joules.

Theyre both the same thing, or theyre both directly proportionate. They have done machines and there was a bit about Ricky Hatton at some engineering college taking measurements and also on shows about MMA. But from what Ive seen it didnt always translate right to what we see from fights. They guys on MMA had the highest measurements when they were on ground and pound compared to standing up and Ricky Hatton had really high measurements on his punches but we know that more knockouts occur standing up in MMA and that Ricky Hatton isnt really a big puncher compared to some others. I think what happens in the knockouts isnt just about the force delivered but also how it lands ect. And the way the head can move around more when standing up versus being on the mat, ect.

Raw, concussive power is not as important as technique. For example there is a thread in the classic forum right now that makes a good argument. It goes like this: If you single out only their best opponents, Ali had a higher KO ratio than Tyson.

Another case along these lines would be Pavlik/Abraham. Very few people would try to claim that Pavlik has more concussive power than Arthur. However, Kelly has a slightly better resume' than Arthur, and a higher KO ratio. In other words, Pavlik is better at stopping opponents than Arthur is even though Arthur is the more powerful puncher.

Miranda is another example. No one doubts Edison's power, but his technique sucks. Consequently he has never stopped a top level opponent.

I like what Bronco McKart said about Kelly Pavlik: "It's not that he hits ya that hard. It's just that everything he throws has somethin' on it."

Technique beats power in most cases.

You get a blindfold and tie Carlos Baldomir on the eyes and have some guys punch him on the chin, the one who puts him on the floor has a good punch power
