I have read quite a number of ringside reports of Charley Burley's bouts on the Newspapers.com website, especially of his bouts in Pittsburgh and Minneapolis. For a fighter of his caliber and reputation, Burley was a terrible gate attraction based on the gate and attendance figures listed in the reports. In addition to not being a charismatic individual, he had a boxing style that was considered dull, often performed indifferently and had far too many bouts that were considered "stinkers" or boring. Both Burley and Sugar Ray Robinson were Black and truly great fighters. But Robinson certainly was a charismatic and colorful individual. In addition, he connected with the fans and became a tremendous gate attraction very quickly. When fans saw him in action, they often came away with the thought of wanting to see him fight again. Robbie was very concerned about the fans getting their money's worth. Ironically, he became a terrific gate attraction in Burley's hometown of Pittsburgh, something that Burley never did. - Chuck Johnston
i consider this a bit different since both fighters made weight Oakland Billy Smith never cut a pound
