Were they on lock down in 1957-1958? If left unchecked Covid- 19 would likely pass those flu numbers.
Big time. China needs to answer and correct these problems that stem from eating and doing lord know what to animals.
I don't know if there was any government enforced lockdown but even in the late 50's the US was largely a rural populace with much less of the high concentrations of urban populations. And mobility was nothing like it is today. If a member of a rural household traveled to the "big city", a) it usually wan't a major metropolis but the nearest town with a grocer and b) it was very infrequent. Thus, there was something of a de facto lockdown compared to today's urban, highly mobile society.
While I generally agree with your sentiment, see the above comments I made to Mendoza's comment regarding the rural/urban balance and mobility in the US in 1957. To some degree there was a de facto lockdown if compared to 2020 US living. Just as an anecdote, I was speaking to an older relative last night regarding the HK Flu. She vaguely remembered it but commented that she was raised on a farm and her father only visited the closest town once a month at most.
I was talking to my wife last night about how different it would be for us if we were living in one of the apartments I had in the Bronx or Manhattan back in the day. Small space, no where to walk around, surrounded by thousands of other people. My older daughter whined a bit yesterday and I literally told her to STFU...imagine being a nurse in NYC right now, and traveling home on the subway to a 3 room apartment with a little kid and an alchoholic, unemployed husband. Tough love. Urban vs rural is certainly a big deal, even in Roman days. I was reading about the Antonine Plague back in the late 2nd century. Turned out it was probably measles. Many people died in the cities, while the rich fled to their rural homes. Just like I did last week when I went to my lake house out in the country. Better odds out there.
The problem is that the Internet idiots put other people at risk. It's infuriating thinking about how the simpletons who think they know better than epidemiology experts likely increased the number of innocent people who will die from this virus and the duration and intensity of our ongoing economic crisis.
https://www.theguardian.com/comment...coronavirus-world-scientists-optimism-experts Just gonna leave this here. Anyone remember hearing about the cruise ship that got hit with Covid-19? Less than 1% death rate on a cruise ship with ZERO VENTILATORS, and minimal medical supplies, amongst a population that was mostly retirees. It was called the Diamond Princess Look it up yourself. Weird huh?
At 8 pm this evening the British population was asked to open their front doors and give a 2 minute round of applause for the NHS staff .I live near the River Thames and we could hear the boots hooting and fireworks going off as we all clapped in support of those brave people on the front line.
all hail the first responders and healthcare workers!! Nurse in Boston 9 months pregnant still on the front line .. Healthcare workers with same issued mask from a month ago, etc .. the real heroes of this pandemic
I am trying to keep my family and I safe. I just had double by pass heart surgery back on Jan 21 2020, and attend my dialysis treatments, 3 times a week, for 4 hours. I have spent as much times as I can with them, watching a lot of movies on television and the ones that I have, which is a lot, like a small video store. And of course some spare time on this site, I hope everyone is well and everyone take good care of your families and yourselves. God Bless.
I went ahead and bought a gym, dumbells, heavy bag, bench, Olympic bar. I feel it's a good investment. This content is protected
