I find he has a somewhat boring personality and much of what he does consists of responding with Cliches or the obvious to questions most of the time.
Lewis' personality isn't suited for commentary. He's not exactly knowledgeable when it comes to calling fights either when I've heard him on HBO. Average.
It was no thumb that ripped Vitali's eye open. The action replay between rounds showed it was a long right hand, then the blood seaped out after the punch. Never seen a replay show a cut open from a punch so clearly. A thumb. You really are crazy.
How can you fault him for blowing someone like Golota out? Only the hardest hitters in the division were ever able to do that. He's taken sickening punishment from Mollo, Bowe and so on without going down. Lennox was just one of the guys powerful enough to completely blow him out of there.
Normally he would be boring, but he has cleverly surrounded himself with perhaps the least inspiring group of commentaters in history and thus his insights are generally the highlight of the broadcasts.
He doesn't really have a talkative nature which puts him at a serious disadvantage. Guys like Foreman and Czyz were. He has improved a lot over the last years though. He is also pretty objective. Foreman usually was biased towards the puncher and Roy always had to bring up "well i'd beat both of them on the same night" and other ego-related statements. Lampley has sort of made fun of Lewis' KO losses quite often or asked "is this like how you got KO'd by..." when it didn't really seem relevant. Most fighters are bitter about their losses but Lewis was professional about it. With the exception of the terrible Kellerman, i really like the HBO team though. Merchant has a ton of experience, isn't afraid to speak his mind and has funny metaphores. Lampley makes things exciting and knows to set an atmosphere, even if his boxing insights are terribly off the mark often.
