Considering the fact that Louis proved his punching power against top ranked super heavyweight sized contenders?
I wasn't aware that he was. You could argue that part of Louis's game was speed and delivery, and that Liston therefore likely had slightly more raw power.
Williams was pretty big, I was watching Louis`s destruction of Schmeling and compared to Liston`s punches most of the shots didn`t look as hard apart from one of the last shots he threw, I feel Liston was a stronger puncher and a stronger fighter, I feel it was the speed and sharpness of Louis`s shots that caused the damage and that they came in combo`s like M.Tyson`s shots, but Liston was the harder one punch cruncher and his jab was a lot harder than Louis`s in my opinion.
Just re-watched Louis knocking out Baer and I have to say my previous reply looks silly now, Louis was banging harder in that bout, the speed and snap in his shots were far above Liston`s.
Well, from what I read on here, many consider Louis an inferior puncher in terms of power than Liston.
I rate Louis as the bigger puncher. Maybe some pick Liston because there were fewer facets to his game, which made the power stand out more. Louis could stop you early, stop you late (Sonny never knocked out an opponent after 7 rounds), and knocked out both larger and more durable fighters.
