How is your sparring progressing?

I improved my footwork and jabbing goes pretty good these days, well timed and quick. What i need to improve is my inside game and tightening the guard a bit ... i attempt to pick the incoming punches off, combined with movement, which doesn't work that well when the opponent throws quick combinations. :good

Mine is definitely improving, and I learned that I'm at least smart enough to realize my flaws, and fix them. I've learned you can be phenomenal when hitting a bag, some boxing mits, or anybody can look like they'd terrorise people at boxing....but yet when you have somebody in your face everything changes. The bag doesn't move, or hit back.
Knowing what I do now I'll never go without sparring for more than a week. Once a week is really the best IMO because you spar, realize what your doing wrong, and have a week to fix it. THEN, spar again, and see where your at. Constantly improve.

BTW: One question to the people who spar a lot. Is going FULL CONTACT a good idea? I haven't yet...Other than boxing people who have no control, and try swinging haymakers at me...Which then I just get STIFF with them, and pick em apart. Is it a good idea to go full contact with your friends at least (with headgear)? We were talking about it, and I'd like to blast somebody, and knock em out, but dunno about people you train with daily. I'd have no hard feelings if they knock me out, but I think I have a much better shot of knocking them out (and will if I get ahold of them), but would feel bad if I hurt one of them/ they'd probably hold some harsh feelings.

You train in a gym right? Sparring is always full contact as far as i'm concerned, unless you think full contact includes low blows etc.

Of course, sparring is to learn and not to punish the guy in front of you, and in general i take it easy... especially when you're more experienced.

I haven't sparred in a few weeks, really. We just set up the ring in our coaches' backyard though, so I'll be sparring in their with our JO 154 pounder who's pretty decent and maybe occasionally with our open 178 pounder. It's nice to get up in the ring and move in a normal competition ring, don't get to do that too often, be good to get actual ring time.

We're going to try but the other day our coach said that we couldn't make the trip. Our club is really stretching our funds thin. I guess we're going to asses our situation after we get back from Ringside and after we do some fundraising. :?

We'll have to see. I'd like to make it out to Cali anyway; but it depends on funds and what I'm doing at that time.

Full contact as in me putting every ounce of power behind my punch, and trying to knock somebodies head off there shoulders. I've always preferred to spar with control, and like it if somebody else has control. That way you can improve. I don't think you should really get black eyes, busted nose, etc from sparring. You should simply get a learning experience, and see the feeling of actually fighting somebody just with control.
Lots of people don't realize that though, they either get mad, or are so unconfident with there abilities they have to try to hit hard to make themselves look better. I'm a pretty built guy, know how to hit properly, and know if I get ahold of almost anybody I could do a ton of damage...but yet I don't have to get stiff, or use my power to prove anything.
So back to my question though. Is going full contact (meaning I could break there nose, bust there lip, give them 2 black eyes, and knock them out) a good idea to do with your friends in a sparring match?

How often have you sparred? It just sounds to me like you've hardly done any real sparring, and that's no knock on you... just that if that's the case, you have other things to worry about than breaking his nose.

To answer your question, as a general rule i take it easy unless the other guy is trying to take your head off. And when i land a hard/punch combination i go easy again because usually that makes them think twice.

What's the deal with this "friend" of yours anyway? Did he steal your girlfriend or something?

My Jeen kune do class...There's been about 4 of us that have been dedicated. Been training together for about 4-5 months, and are good friends. I take it easy to...I mean if somebody is charging you/ very aggressive you do have to give them a couple stiff shots to make them get off you, but I don't feel like sparring should ever be an actual fight.
Maybe I'm to nice. I mean if I went to a boxing gym, and some dude I didn't know was actually fighting I wouldn't have any mercy (i've been in that situation before), but laying in to my training partners isn't as easy for me.

Spar regularly 3 times a week, occasionally 2. Rarely less then 10 rounds, usually 12 and with a mix of 4 fighters.

Sometimes spar a relatively new person and just practice defence and not getting hit, letting them work their punches and get comfortable. If they hit me a bit hard, I give it back some.

Sometimes spar a much better and more experienced person then me, and I go hard and try to find ways to break down his defence and deal with his speed.

Sometimes spar ginorous ex MMA guys at our gym who have 50 + lbs on me and try to take my head off. Their boxing skills aren't so good and it's fun when I can dance around them and pop pop pop, but not so fun when they land that big one. It leaves marks.

In short, I spar a lot and try to get as much variety as possible. Do most of my conditioning outside the gym, so can focus strictly on technique and sparring when I am there, and lucky to have a club that allows for it.
