Baer did not last four rounds. He was downed in the third and crushed in the fourth ... Baer did not land one of his bombs ... I just don't see it ..Louis actually was quoted as saying after the bout he could not believe how overated Max's power was ...

Well nothing you've said here actually contradicts what I wrote.

I think Schmeling, Marciano, Charles and Walcott should have been ranked higher too....Conn's fight that he waged vs Louis was truly remarkable, but Schmeling in particular deserved the most praise for the way he dismantled Louis AFTER the Brown Bomber had so thoroughly destroyed Schmelings contemporaries, namely Baer, Carnera, Uzcudun and right after losing to Schmeling, Sharkey.

Baer did land one big shot. Looks big to me, anyway, looks like Louis felt it :

It was reported that Baer fought with a broken thumb. Hand injuries had been dogging him in recent months leading up to that fight, starting with an injury he sustained in April 1935 in an exhibition against Eddie Simms, then again in the Braddock fight. One newspaper reported his thumb rummoured to be broken on the very day of the Louis fight.

He was probably thinking about the men he beat because Schmeling was no doubt a very tough fight at that point in time and he often said he would have always had trouble with Rocky's style.Notice he did not mention Charles and that was the 3 he lost too

I also thought Buddy Baer and Arturo Godoy gave him trouble and Tommy Farr but in the 1st Conn fight, Billy gave the fight of his life but I guess I was not in the ring

Could be he felt Max Baers power and Billy had movement and power in fight 1

:clap:Well, done, an excellent and diligent analysis. It seems that few historical champions have benefited more by the proliferation of online footage than Primo. All the negative ink published about Carnera and mindlessly parroted over the years is being offset by the opportunities we now have to watch and judge him for ourselves.

Primo did a lot better against Joe than many more highly touted victims of the Bomber. Carnera had heart, and a combination of physical strength and stamina which Foreman could only envy. If Primo lacked a punch, at least he developed excellent endurance by virtue of that deficit in firepower. Campolo, Impellitiere and Lasky demonstrated that he could deal effectively with opponents of comparable height. King Levinski 2X, Uzcudun 2X, Jim Maloney and Loughran are solid distance performances.

Carnera did well against Baer in those rounds where he kept his feet. Nat Fleischer accurately stated that Primo actually had the advantage in speed all the way, and Carnera proved him right. If he hadn't screwed up his ankle during a first round knockdown (sending him to a hospital), who knows what might have happened? With scoring on a rounds basis, and Max in questionable shape, is a Baer win really a certainty?

So if Primo lacked a punch, how did he rack up all those KO's ? Couldn't be hand picked opponents and tank jobs could it ? Louis is on the record saying he could have taken Primo out much earlier but was told by his management to let it go five rounds.
