I'd be surprised if he managed it once in ten fights.

These are without a doubt the top two heavyweights of all time, so predicting a whitewash or an easy fight for either is silly. Feeling certain about the fight at all means your crazy or stupid . That being said, I've always favored Ali.

Too fast imo. The way Ali made Sonny Liston look does it for me.

Very good article. Thing is,there are as many reasons why Ali could have beaten Louis. I still pick Ali out of the two of them to win. What a dream fight it would have been though.

This is the greatest dream bout in the history of boxing and for me it could really is a battle of speed vs. power. In this case I think power wins yes Ali was fast, quick, but if Joe Louis were to land a body shot then that was game it was always said once Loius got an opponent hurt it was over and I think he would have eventually caught Ali and pounded him.

Yeah, it's moronic to too far one way on either pick.

That said, Liston seems a shell in his fight with Clay. I think a prime version of Liston beats that version of Clay/Ali. Futhermore, a prime Louis destroys that early version of Clay. A couple years later and things would get competitive.

I think Clay really grew a lot from his fights with Jones and Cooper. The Clay that fought Liston was a step up from any version of him that had fought before, imo.

And Liston was coming off the best wins of his career going into this fight. He showed up in sub par shape for sure but he was far from being out of shape and while being past his best, I certainly wouldn't call him a shell. And the fact that this was a young and still not peaked version of Clay/Ali makes it all the more impressive.

The idea of Louis beating him involves getting him hurt and being the best finisher. Or closing the gap, cutting the ring off, and banging him on the ropes.

Frazier is better than no man at this strategy, and even his fight against a 4 year off version was relatively competitive.

We all know Louis had trouble with Conn and Walcott. Ali is better than both overall. The speed, the movement, the reflexes... the fierce combination of Louis against Ali would look pretty useless.

Tyson, Frazier, Marciano, have a better chance at fighting that fight in my view.

Even Holmes, who would get beat at a better game would have a better chance to control the action, in my view.

Just not a favorable matchup for Louis. Although, admittedly, I think Louis is ever so slightly overrated H2H. But still... Louis has a better shot against Holmes, Liston, Foreman, and Frazier.

This article says it all...The young Joe Louis of the Max Baer fight would have caught up with the showboating, but outgunned Ali, and finished him off...Ali had nothing to hold this version of Joe Louis...Nothing...Louis's
jab was much superior to Ken Norton's jab that confused Ali..Joe's jab was described as a battering ram..And Louis held his great power for 15 rounds, if needed, because he wasted no punches...Once Louis hurt you.it was all over..He punched with tremendous speed, power and accuracy.Ali would be able to run, but he couldn"t hide....Folks, check out the Louis /
Max Baer fight...Than you will concur...Joe louis at that time was lightning in the bottle...Deadly....

Ali without question had the better jab. I assume we're not taking the Ali of the mid 70's and pitting him up with the Louis of the late 30's here.
