didnt read it all but its interesting

I wonder how long it took the Ali losses to make Liston disappear from this stature

One of the most interesting things to come out of that article is that Liston seems to have been growing in popularity as a champion. What a shame that he couldn’t have kept up this direction, both in terms of his training and his public persona. It underlines that Liston could be quite charming when he chose to be. It further underlines what many of us know, that Liston was a real monster head to head, and should have been so much more.

I still stand by my statement that had Liston not retired on his stool because of a shoulder injury he would have beaten Ali in their first fight. Perhaps by KO. If you watch the fight you'll see it was starting to go into Liston's favor.

Nice article from 1963...until Sonny...as champion...QUIT while sitting on his stool against the light hitting Cassius Clay in 1964! Liston was not mentally tough...Ali got into his head. Let's not talk about the....ahem..."fight" up in Maine in May 1965

Ali was the wildcard. The joker in the deck, who messed up a lot of legacies during his reign.

I thought the 6th round Liston looked pretty bad. He seemed to do nothing, and couldn't slip Clay's punches.

it just showed as much wrong was the old people, just like they picked liston to kill clay, all they guys pre ali were overrated, marciano, louis, dempsey(this one a great street fighter),jefries, liston all them would have beaten by tons of more modern, bigger good guys. they took cleveland williams like a big force lol, in a modern era in terms of class williams would have been anything between david jaco and botha

Even if I concede that modern boxers are better, why would it be overrating anyone in 1963 to consider these men the best there had been.

    They simply were.

    "modern, bigger good guys"

    who hadn't been born yet.

"they took Cleveland Williams as a big force lol, in a modern era in terms of class Williams would have been anything between Jaco and Botha."

So you expect a 1963 article to consider how Williams compares to 21st century fighters????

I shouldn't go this far, but frankly this is about the silliest post I have come across on this board.

oh jesus poor guy, i think that you suffered an cerebral ictus, i can´t find another explanation.

my point is... on this forum you have guys THAT HAVE SEEN MODERN ATHLETES, and still say that the writters of these bull****s were right...they live in the past.. poor nostalgic people.... liston would have been crushed by joe frazier, you don´t have to go to the time of foreman, tyson etc, ali did show to the world that a new era o athletes was coming, ali looked very big/tall next to liston who usually fought little cruisers or medium sized nobodies like william. the myth of the giant bad monster liston is a joke.. he was 6´0 1/2 and weighed 208 pounds, actually joe frazier was more compact and as heavy.

btw, did they know cassius clay when picked liston to kill him or not? uh?

In round 5 Liston was catching up with Ali who had slowed down quite a bit and was not dancing at all in the 6th round. While Liston wasn't perfect and dominating, I felt he was taking over. You can only go toe to toe with Liston for so long. But that is if Liston didn't have the shoulder injury so unfortunately history is history.
