It shouldn't be a shock to anyone if (or should I say when) HBO drops boxing from their network. They are making absolutely zero profits from their boxing shows. Especially now since Haymon's PBC is in full swing. The executives are probably debating right now when they should go through with the cancellation. The thing is, HBO is a movie and TV show channel. They just aren't suited for sports. Look at their hit show, Game of Thrones. It's such a popular show and damn near everyone watches it. They make tons and tons of profit from it's popularity alone. But what about boxing? What do they get from that? Zero, squat, nada. My only hope is that PBC opens its door to 3 guys in particular from HBO, them being Roy Jones, Hopkins and Max Kellerman. 3 superb commentators who don't deserve to lose their jobs because HBO can't seem to produce profits any longer. It's not their fault that HBO refuses to make good fights anymore.
HBO made tons of money from guys like PBF and Pac in recent years. They still have Canelo who will do well. But the outlook compared to earlier doesn't look as good I agree. New stars will have to emerge in order to make it worth it.
PPV has been their bread and butter at HBO sports for decades. Mayweather and Pacquiao are a dying breed and the fact that Haymon has forced other guys like Top Rank and Golden Boy to stage fights on regular networks and spanish channels has forced their hands at HBO. The President of HBO Sports had to step down behind that GGG PPV. HBO had a chance to get UFC before they blew up but they had no hindsight into what it would become. Everybody is kicking their own ass at that network because of Mayweather leaving.
They average about 1 million viewers per show. That would be a lot of subscriptions to lose if they drop boxing. The only reason I have premium cable or cable for that matter is boxing.
Canelo has a **** load of options from 147 to 154 that would love to fight him. He doesn't have to fight at 160 he can even get guys that fight at 160 to fight at catch weights if he wants.

Losses on records just mean that you take risks and aren't afraid of challenges. Fighters like Canelo, and ODLH, Pacquiao, Duran, Hearns, Leonard do not need to have a perfect record. The UFC is being sued left and right and the fighters on the come up are suffering before they even hit the networks. That is where it becomes ****ty.
