I think that Hopkins won the first fight but it was extremely close. When you have fight's this close there is an immediate rematch. Instead of giving Hopkins the rematch he deserves Calzaghe retired.

...And one of the greatest boxers of his generation. Calzaghe knew he had two options: Hopkins or retire. That's just a fact. The Hopkins rematch was the most real option in the eyes of fans. It was a narrow Split Decision that needed to be rectified. That said, he can enjoy his retirement.
Floyd already rematched Castillo and beat him decisively because he knew he could. Calzaghge never gave Hopkins a rematch though because he saw the Pavlik fight and knew that Hopkins could beat him.
