how much experience did you need as a fan before you understood enough about technical boxers to like them?

Hmm I got hooked on boxing in 2000.
At first I would criticize the pure technicians too much. I would say it took me 3-4 years for me to fully appreciate a pure technician. I think the first year I got hooked on boxing slowed that process for me as it was with MAB-Morales. I then went through all the great wars that we had seen until that point and set the bar very high. I expected every fight to be like that. After a few years I started to see wars like that are not the norm and most guys at this level do not have wars ala MAB-Morales.

My favourite fighter growing up was Don Curry , it doesnt get more technically correct than that left hook.

Prior to that Wilfredo Benitez showed the way boxing should be .

About a year or two. At first I was only interested in sluggers.

    about 1-2 years

My boyhood hero was Mike Tyson. People don't pay him attention for his technical skills.

As a casual or hardcore fan? When I started really watching it only took me a fight or two to grasp and begin appreciating the science since I'm a sucker for stuff like that in sports

Considering I got serious as a (teen/young adult) boxing fan around the time Barrera underwent his magical transformation, my appreciation came pretty early on.

I've never been in love with slugging. I don't even understand why everyone loves Hagler vs Hearns.

I got into the sport, like many people, due to Ali -- it was his speed, footwork, and graceful style that got me interested. I also liked Hamed, which might seem like an odd choice due to the fact that he was a KO artist, but he was essentially a counter-puncher at heart. In his early fights he fought like a cat -- he would spring in and out, using upper body movement and reflexes to avoid punches, while countering shots with his own. I liked how unusual his style felt, and while I wouldn't call it technical, he didn't fight like a typical big hitter. He fought in more of a 'boxer' style. This was during his bantamweight period and early featherweight footage, though.

Floyd got me back into the sport with his performance against Gatti. Leonard was another guy I grew to like, and then I stumbled across Whitaker.

    Aside from all that:

The opening post seems to imply that all you need is experience to enjoy technical boxers, and that people who don't enjoy them are somehow lesser fans. I've seen that mentality before around here, and it's unfair to the fans who don't care for that sort of thing. If they don't like technical fighters, fair enough. We all have our own preferences.

    This for me aswell

Exact reason for hamed who got me into boxing

Although Ali was a bit before my time, i used to like Lennox and how he was controlled and calculated in the ring... Patient, then bang would throw some bombs

I like boxers who can out think their opponents and control the match through intelligence... not just out muscle them

I like to put Hamed under the niche category of "slick puncher"

Also, (in risk of getting flamed) to be a fan of boxing as a whole you need to appreciate all styles. Just because a slugger is good at what he does doesn't mean you shouldn't appreciate him as a fan of the "sweet science." There's a "science" to that too.

It's like hating on the people who use rush-down tactics on RTS; it's part of the game.

just remember what Foreman says about jazz and boxing: the better it gets, the less people understand it.
Casual fans will always prefer sluggers because the excitement, i admit that its very entertaining to see fights like Angulo vs kirkland. But to appreciate a true technichian you must have to experience yourself, somehow, being in the ring and understand the magic of outbox a stronger fighter.
I remember that guy back in Cuba that i used to hang out with on my teen years,he was around 130-140 and always would sparr with people above MW.The way he manage the distance, the jab,the counterpunching,footwork...for me was just magic,a science.

I've always only enjoyed watching brawlers when their opponents are willing to brawl with them. If they aren't it is almost always the technical boxer what lands the better shots and is more entertaining.
