I've actually found the term "peak" more useful than "prime" (though this term to me encompasses potential, the best time in an individual's life, something I love, and hence my name here). Every individual who lives long enough goes through a time in which his body is strongest, most flexible, toughest, along with the sharpest mental alertness. This is his prime. Tyson was in the prime of life when Douglas smashed him. But "peak" means that fight or fights when the fighter brings it all together: the physical prowess along with the keenest focus, desire, skill. I believe it could happen in one fight or just a few: Tyson peaked from Berbick to Spinks; Louis from around Mann to B. Baer. It is not easy to hold everything together; thus, a performer's peak time is relatively short. You want to see the real Ali? Watch him against Williams. The galaxies were aligned: he had blossomed physically (at to me a heavyweight's physical prime between around 25 to 27); he had several successive defenses under his belt, thus was on a roll; he was eating right (under Islamic precepts); he had been practicing one thing, boxing, for just over 10 years (10 years, the time an individual must keep at something, anything, to develop the potential for greatness); not only that, but he happened to have been born to do just that very thing in life: boxing; he thus moved in that Houston ring like an eagle takes to the skies; he had something larger than himself to fight for (his religious beliefs during a time of turmoil). It all came together and magic is not an everyday thing (although it could with more individuals like Ali to step forward). Hunger, hunger, the Eye of the Tiger, makes a peak come about. Once a fighter becomes "civilized" (wink at Mick), the seamtresses begin measurements on the final curtain.
Speaking of prime . Who is that 'PRIME' rear end in your avatar? Damnn! Early/mid twenties to early thirties is what I consider a fighters prime. I normally don't accept the argument(barring injury) that a fighter is past his prime before 30(Tyson?)
Prime seems to last really between 3-6 years and apart from the body taking a beating through fighting and training, don't forget how hard you have to train to be at the top, it almost impossible to not get mentally jaded after this time, which is why a prime can be anywhere from early twenties to late thirties but never seems to last more than that 3-6 years.
there is a study..title reign is around 2.5 yrs while prime is around 5 yrs...robinson more than doubled that
