We know that gloved boxing became the official sport in the late 1800's, but how long have boxers been using gloves in training?
From atleast that time, and maybe even before. I'm pretty sure old time bare knuckles used to tutor aristocracy, and they used gloves to preserve the hands.
I've seen some really old images/paintings/drawing of fighters from even before then using gloves. I wonder how long its been a thing for.
The ancient greeks would fight in gloves and spar bareknuckle. That trend turned when Jack Broughton rediscovered the concept of gloves and made the first pairs out of horsehair for sparring. Sometime around 1746 IIRC.
Jack Broughton apparently used they for training with richer clients to stop them getting cut up. So Broughton is usually creditted. I've never really looked into the truth of this. I think @Senya13 has posted stuff on it before, but I can't remember the thread.
