Basically, how old are you? Yes, this is a classical example of the age old style of oppression known as.... ageism? I forget, forgive me. I've only been following the sport a little longer than I've been a member of this site... So a little over 10 years now. I'm 29 years old. I'm imagining that makes me one of the younger member of forum... though I know there are a few younger than me around.
Not really ,but people frequently use it when replying to me. I presume it is something complimentary?
And here I was legitimately interested in hearing other peoples stories and info. I guess I'll keep on waiting for more willing participants.
I can't get involved here, there is a budding coup against me,my Mod protectors have betrayed me. Got to watch my wrinkly old back.
That's incredible, and you probably don't ever even think about the bitter and cynical modern fans like me who envy you on about a dozen different levels. It's rough, man.
Started seriously following boxing in the early 90s, so it's been a little over 25 years now. I didn't really get into watching older fights until around 5 years ago though. I'm in my early 40s.
Do you feel like the games changed for the worse, been even further diluted, in the past 25 years? Because it certainly seems that way to me.
Since 1968 or 69, about 4 years old, when my mother started taking me to the fights at the Olympic Auditorium.
64 years old, around circa 1960 when my dad told me about Floyd Patterson. Great post 'youngster'! Such a great time then! Gillette Friday night fights, always major bouts. Wide world of Sports Saturday afternoon with many contender matchups AND the occasional Championship Fight at no charge. Boxing has taken such a 'hit' in recent years with multi-'champs', etc. I remember Dad taking me to the barber shop in the early sixties and there was always a Ring Magazine there for us to read before my turn. Everyone knew who was top 10 for the most part. Sadly, you had to have been there at the time for all those Gillette Friday-niters and the Saturday WWOS matchups!
You're literally the exact age as my father. I was whining to him later about how boxing has fundamentally changed and is, well, diluted compared to what it was just a few decades ago, none the less 50 years ago. He didn't really follow because he never closely followed boxing. He doesn't know what he missed, he could have been tuned in during the Golden Years of more than one era...
I was born in 1952, and my dad (who had boxed a bit as an amateur) startede to take me to local amateur shows in '60 or '61, if I remember correctly. In 1963 he took me to my first pro show, which featured a prime Emile Griffith in the main event - and I have been hooked ever since!
