How long have you watched boxing for, and how did you get into it?

dont even remember watching it but the buzz about it was great

 

For about 4 years as a casual follower of the sport, in the last 2 years I've really become a hardcore fan.

 

I used to watch Ali in the late 70s with my old man. Really got into it in the early/mid 80s with Leonard, Hearns, Duran and Hagler in the USA and Minter, Honeyghan, Sibson, McGuigan etc in the UK.

 

At the time I was amazed by the skills of Cotto and thought he had blistering speed I had heard his name mentioned as a potential opponent for Mayweather and as being a star so was aware of him but I had never heard of Margarito and did not watch the pre-fight hype from Bunce and Kerr.

I was transfixed by what I was watching towards the end of the fight, I was really rooting for Cotto for no other reason then the fact he was unbeaten and I wanted him to beat Mayweather. I had never heard of Margarito and presumed that this was a huge shock, I thought from looking at his record he was a contender and no more.

Looking back I laugh at the fact I thought that Mayweather-Cotto would be made more then anything else, also makes me laugh that I thought Cotto was fast and that I thought Margarito was a tough contender.

To be honest if I knew Margarito was a 3 time Welterweight Champion that would have damaged that moment for me because I liked the idea of it being a shock and this guy coming from nowhere to win and get through this fight by being tough and nothing else.

 

Are you me? Thats exactly how I fully progressed into being a proper boxing fan ?! Though Ive got to say the Sprott-Harrison-Skelton-Williams fights on ITV were always good viewing

 

My first memory of any sport, was a News Flash of Nigel Benn vs Chris Eubank I, it must of been minutes after Chris Eubak had beaten Nigel Benn. All i can remember of the News flash, was a vivid picture of Nigel Benn and that damaged eye of his......"The picture covered the whole screen".

And all you could hear was the News Reporters voice, explaining what had happened.

I must of been all but 4 years old.

All the big fights of the early 1990's, i watched them as a child.

Boxing and athletics was a big part of my life in the early 1990's.

 

I used to watch the Big Fight Live Fights on ITV when I was around so I saw Williams-Harrison and I saw a lot of Amir Khan's early fights. It really is a shame that Boxing is not on terrestrial TV it makes such a huge difference in terms of building a following.

 

The whole eubanks/benn thing got me into boxing.

 

The first fight i remember watching was Eubank-Benn when i was just a kid,i can remember going mad punching the bed and everything for a eubank win dont know why i liked him so much probably due to liking fighters with arrogance.

I then didnt really watch anything during maybe lennox and some naz,started to watch hatton and calzaghe but its just last 4/5 years why i try not to miss a fight and stay up for them bought setanta,premier and espn for it.

Trying to learn the technical side more when i watch it but i suppose its bit difficult without actually having boxed.

 

I was 8-9 years old and saw the Ali - Spinks I and then the return which Ali won and I was totally and utterly hooked from then on.

 

Similar too me, Calzaghe Lacy and Hatton Tzsyu got me back into boxing, and slowly watched more and more, and then a guy at work told me about bunces boxing hour, then bunce told me about here........:bbb

 

sky's hyping of hatton mayweather helped alot

 

Got into boxing in 1990 when Benn v Eubank 1 was shown live on telly. I was 11 and that was me hooked. Followed that era and our Brit pack very closely and then got into the history of it - particularly the middleweights and particularly the likes of Hagler and that gang.

I've kinda fallen away from the sport a little at the moment for various reasons. Have hardly watched any boxing over the last few months but I'll catch up no doubt.

 

I felt pretty much the same! Regards Cotto I thought he was this unbeatable monster, with speed and everything else. Mind you up against Margarito it was hard for him not to look fast.

I only knew a bit about Margarito's class because a guy from my Dad's work was going on about the fight saying it was a must watch, and with everyone else in the trade talking about it I got well excited about it and knew Margarito was worth the watch.

Was a shock to see Cotto lose, especially in such brutal fashion, but Margarito made a fan out of me that night.

 

Cant remember not watching boxing,was obsessed with the rocky films as a kid and i use to rent out Ali video's,friend of mine use to get all the Naz ppv's and we would stay over and watch them,but i became a hardcore fan after watching the first Barrera vs Morales fight..
