I second that. He looked as sharp as ever against Carl Williams in june 1989. For my money he wasn't at his absolute best against Douglas, but not really far from it. He got beat fair and square.
Yeah he wasn't passed it like some would have you believe, he just underestimated a fighter who also happened to have the fight of his life.
i honestly think Tyson as the real fighter was finished in 1990. So 1986-90. I think 1988 was his peak.
for me, tysons absolute peak was his clinical, cynical, systematic beating of tyrell biggs....he could have finished this guy but played with him in a display of eloquent savagery not seen since ali drubbed the likes of patterson...the man shone briefly, but burnt ferociously...
So, I guess we can agree that if Mike hit the prime time in 1970, he would be washed up by mid' 73. Dempsey-esque.
I dont think we managed to witness Tyson at his absolute best at all. At the age of 23, approaching the time when most H/Ws are establishing themselves as genuine contenders, Mike was on the road to becoming a mentally burned out kid. All the factors that come into play, beginning with the death of Cus, slowly consumed Tyson. The management change, from Jacobs/Cayton to Don "****" King.. the change of trainers, the marriage to a gold digging *****, the constant misadventures out side of the ring soon showed on the nature of Mike in the ring. Douglas eventually walked through Tyson with a fantastic finishing combination. Tyson barely picked up a round in that fight, other than the knock down. After that loss, with a couple of early KOs (including Henry Tillman who beat Mike in Ams), and the sub-typical Tyson wins over Ruddock affected by '**** allegations', Tyson inturn spent time in the lock up. All thanks to another filthy slut. Filthy little lying skank, with nothing but cash on her mind. Who would testify in court, that mid way through being 'raped', she agreed to change positions and get on top????? Slut. With the early disturbances, combined with this.... plus Tyson not fighting again until the age of 29... I find dificulty in saying Tyson had a true prime. His finest years were deffinately 87- 90.... even through his Pro. debut- '90 were all eveidently brilliant years... yet, he was still going through the transitions which, if undisturbed, would be used with great potency at what ever stage Mike would have peaked at. In retrospect... his most formidable years should have been '90 -'98... Some amazing bouts would have been in the offering in those years. Those who claim to 'love Mike', the handlers, managers, promoters, trainers, hangers on etc. can take full responsibility for the disasterous figure Mike become. Selfish bunch of scum they are.
