Was it actually 40 years? If so this may be the longest any boxer has ever boxed professionally.

    Approaching 40 years, I believe.

Saoul Mamby has him clearly beaten, though.

I believe he started boxing in late 1967 and ended in 2001, so 34 years. Very few have ever boxed this long, and he was still able to compete with a guy like Camacho when he was 45, and beat a decent fighter like Jorge Castro when he was at 168lbs, 50lbs above the weight he started at.

too bad duran had to keep fighting - too bad his money vanished.

you think he would have fought 34 years if he had money?

The amazing part of this is a believe he's basically healthy, which is amazing, give the type of fighter he was and the amount of to tough fights he was in.

I don't think that Duran after the 80's (he was in the ring with Leonard 3 times, Hagler, and Hearns, plus a lot of other pretty well now fighters) ever needed to fight for money again. He is fine now, both in terms of health and finance, but while I'm not positive, I believe Duran simply fought in the 90's because that's who he is, he's a fighter. Hell, if it were'nt for the car crash he probably would have fought past 2001, and he was already 50 then. The man was a born fighter, probably more so than any other boxer I know of.

Roberto Duran retired on February 1989; after a 21 year career.

Some jokers claim he lost to Pat Lawlor... what next? Getting stopped by William Joppy? Please, that was not Duran;)

How is this? He always donated his earnings to the poor.
