I honestly believe it doesn't matter. Look at Williams fight...Did it matter for him? If anything I think not being anywhere near the range of weight class you fighting in, depleting youself like hell, and then putting it all back in yoru body within one night TAKES MORE OUT OF YOU THAN IT'S WORTH! You aren't going to be strong whenever you starved yourself for the last week just to make weight. It's like having a flu for 3 days, and then going back to the gym the day after...You might be better, but you aren't going to be 100%.
Most of these fighters are simply hurting themselves. And like somebody else said about the Heavyweight division..You got 210 fighting 270. That is totally more unfair than a WW gaining 20 pds the night before. You got a guy like Klitchko who is naturally a big, muscled 250. Take a guy who is naturally 210...What shot does he got????

and isn't the primal rule of boxing to "protect yourself at all times"?

Technically. Losing THAT much weight is the same as taking too much punishment.

I'd personally rather get punched in the face twice than have to lose 20 pounds of water weight.

I couldn't agree more. Look at Castillo once he couldn't make 135 anymore. He killed himself to make that weight for so long that he was shot by the time he couldn't make it anymore. Cotto got smart quick and stopped killing himself to make 140 and we see how much stronger he looks. I love your flu reference. After having the flu for 3 days you'd have to pay me millions just to drive by a ****ing gym!

Correct, but if he continues to box at a weight which he clearly shouldn't be, then he could lose again, & then he could find himself hardly earning anything in the Welter division.

What must have Williams ate in order to put on 17/18lbs in what, 24-30 hours between the weigh-in & fight time?

I mean, fighters who put on that amount of weight, surely when they get in the ring, they must feel sluggish, lethargic, like they wearing led boots or something?

Putting on 17/18lbs suggests Williams is now really struggling with his weight & that he had to really starve himself in the days leading up to the fight.

Surrely he must have felt physically uncomfortable?

Amazing as it sounds, the 17/18 pounds was MAINLY water. Of course he starved himself of food, and of course water as well, but it's the fluid that lost him 18 pds. I couldn't imagine how difficult, and grueling that'd be. Bodybuilders start about a week ahead of time, depleting themselves, but they do get to do some carb loading within that week (there weight doesn't really fluciate this much in a week either usually), but couldn't imagine AT LEAST an entire of week of not eating/ drinking much. There's no way he could have only done it for 2 days or so, and lost that much weight.
As for him doing it again. I dunno...Maybe he'll do it better this time. I'm not sure what his natural weight is (probably around 170), but he did look a little heavier than his fight against Margarito (he was pretty skinny then). Who knows..Maybe he didn't train all that hard for the fight, thus keeping his weight higher than normal, and THEN suddenly has to lose all of it. Instead this time he'll train, get his normal weight to say 160-165, and then drop. I think whatever he does this time he'll win. He looked extremely dissapointed in himself, you could tell he wasn't himself, and after his first loss it looks like it's gonna give him some motivation. I'd bet he comes out wtih a lot of aggression, throwing near 100 punches a round again. Besides, he knows Quintana can't really hurt him...Why wouldn't he just attack him next time he's in shape?
