Terence Crawford can't draw. Andre Ward couldn't draw. Teofimo Lopez can't draw as much as he thinks he can. And the examples in modern boxing are endless. People spend many millions on purse bids and PPVs to promote fighters who cant draw jack ****. How long until they stop doing this? I feel like without Canelo and the HW division boxing would be totally underground. Boxing right now is full of entitled cry babies who think they deserve millions for drawing 5000 fans.
People tired of spending money for these TV fights. That's like robbery and it's disrespectful to the boxing community. If Crawford starts talking to Spence like Rolly was talking to Tank, he will probably get the fight. He needs to start talking big smack. The only thing is, that's not Crawford's way.
Does seem to be way more terrible PPV's recently than normal. I wonder if this is simply due to TV networks sick of losing money and so telling promoters it has to be PPV so if it makes a loss it's the promoter that takes the hit and not the network. I think it's really only a matter of time before other networks follow HBO's example and quit boxing if they keep losing money on boxing events. But then there always seems to be a new kid on the block throwing money at the sport, DAZN, RocNation, Triller, BKL Prime, many that lose money and quickly go out of business only to be replaced by another one.
Why you acting like that's Crawford's fault. They brought that deal to Crawford with guaranteed 10 mil. They never sold or vigorously promoted the fight. They never enlisted or had any stipulations in the contract that Crawford promote the fight. They stepped out on faith and it cost them. I agree that it should never have been a ppv fight in the first place but who's gonna turn down 10 milli? Mayweather built his brand with the 24/7 and whenever he had a fight you seen a promotion almost every day. Canelo is lucky in that he is Mexican because they support thier fighters 100%. He had that, plus an excellent promotional team operating in the US and in most parts of the boxing world. Spence is fighting out of Texas and he has a lot of Mexican fans plus Black and Brown people. He also has the support of Jerry Jones and that ain't no small potatos. You cann't forget the Mayweather / Al Haymon input. All Crawford got is Omaha. He has no real promotional force behind him. Nobody will touch the money that Mayweather made because he did it all the way right.
Everything under 160 is underwhelming, they're too small. I'll probably get a lot of flack for saying this but boxing is all about the heavyweight division. Spence, Crawford, Charlo. . Sorry lads but they're midgets.
Honestly, as long as the media plays along and the optics of a full arena are there, they’ll continue
Good post and something I hadn't given as much thought to as it deserves. With HBO out of boxing completely and other networks moving away from it, perhaps there are other ambitious newbies who see a vacancy and dollar signs in their eyes. They all think they can fill the broadcasting vacancy left by HBO.
There's always money it's just a case of where from and how well distributed it gets. The whole NFT Crypto scam sphere looks like it's caving in. Boxing still a good way to move money. People cry about big fights not getting made but more often than not the business side hasn't taken care of itself first. Fury Usyk are making nearly double what they could make simply because Saudi's are printing oil money which they are happy to throw at them. Hell these Saudi's could even negotiate the price down but they don't haggle over tens of millions...they want what they want. chump change. We have come out of an era of excess with Pacquiao & Floyd. Haymon hasn't managed the American assets well enough. Wilder would still be a nobody without Fury. Canelo draws pretty well but he's a ginger midget. AJ is a manufactured golden goose that has been cooked. Pretty sure the money is going to come from Wilder & Fury moving into the future but that relies on Fury not retiring. AJ can pull some weight still but he is getting smashed up into retirement very soon.
I don't think much longer. The return on investment simply is not there in this sport. Everyone wants to protect their o and that does not make for good fights or ratings.
