How long would it take (to train at boxing) and be able to defend yourself?

Honestly, it depends on my male friends in the situation, and how many assholes there are picking a fight. Everyone knows that when **** throws down, your buds jump in, no questions asked. I wouldn't put my buds in a situation where they could get hurt helping out, just because I want to act tough front in front of 5 assholes when I'm with one other bud.

Also, I think I'm a pretty tough dude, but if there's six other guys there all spoiling for a fight, then discretion is the better part of valor. Look, everyone likes to stick up for themselves, but sometimes swallowing your pride is the much better option than getting brain damage from being kicked in the head on the ground. Street fights can be ****ing brutal.

You really don't get it. This is a mindset any fighter should have. If you go into a fight "knowing" you're the best fighter in the world, you have strong self confidence and won't back down after taking a solid shot. Are you the best fighter in the world? No. But like I said it's a mindset that gives a huge advantage. If you go into a fight thinking you may win, you'll lack confidence, give up easier so have less of a chance of winning.

Again, not surprised you have no clue what you're talking about. This doesn't apply to you anyway as you're not a fighter.

Well now you're just flat out making stuff up. I never mentioned anything about weapons.

Plus I'd rather the other guy have the gun and shoot you because at this point I just wish you'd be killed and stop bothering people on this forum.

And echoing what virus just said, if you go into a fight thinking you'll lose, you've already lost half the battle.

I'm gonna give some advice right now that I should be charging to give you, but since I genuinely feel sorry for you I'll do it for free, how about that??? Actually I just love these kinds of topics because I looooove psychology

I'm a psychology major (that means I go to school, you might remember what that was  ) and recently there's been an overabundance of new-age positive-thinking pseudo-scientific crap, in particular the misconception of the "If I think I will win, I will perform better" mentality -- the problem with your kind of thinking (or lack thereof) is you're focusing on the outcome instead of the process (in the form of, since "I am a better fighter thus I should win this fight").

Imagine this. You get into a fight and you get your ass kicked, now what? What happens during fights #2, #3, and #4? What if you lose the next one, and the next one? But wait...I'm "the best fighter in the world" ... or at least I think I am??? Where will you confidence come from when you realize that Fight Night Round 4 isn't as easy as an actual fight? What will your internet friends say!

Now the thing is, you are an extraordinarily unintelligent person (no offense)...so this makes it much, MUCH more difficult for you. If you think you're going to fool your brain into being an automaton and not have any emotional connection to previous fights you've lost you're kidding yourself (think Kasparov vs Deep Blue, or think of Team A vs Team B, where Team A has "momentum") -- are these athletes just not as smart as you? Are the sports psychologists working with them just irrelevant, overpaid zealots?

Here's a quote you might enjoy: "If you know you are doing the right things, just relax and perform. Forget about the outcome"

-- that quote was from a guy called Michael Jordan...but what does he know about success? Only keyboard-warriors who post 24/7/365 know about success!!!

Nah that's not true, didn't you get the memo? Apparently, according to some of the super-amazing-tough-uber-strong "fighters" in this thread boxing (in of itself) doesn't help at all with fighting. What you need is to carry a gun, a knife, and if someone begins to insult you you must immediately stab or shoot them. :)

OH, and if you "act black" you should stop acting black. If you have an accent you should forcefully change it, especially if it bothers someone. If you "act gay", stop acting gay. If you're a woman and someone is bothered, dress up like a man. etc etc etc.
