Haven't posted in a while... Watched Floyd vs Marquez the other night. Fell asleep around round 7. Woke up around round 11. But I was struck by one thing about Floyd: The lack of combination punching. Apart from a couple (perhaps three) classic 1-2s, I saw only single punches from Floyd. Now, did anyone pay more attention? How many combinations DID he actually throw? Hell, if I had his skills and talents, I would like to think I would have thrown LOTS of combinations. I mean, the man does have fantastic tools. Perhaps he threw all his compbinations around round 8-10 when I was asleep???
He's not a combination puncher. Hes a defense first, pot shot fighter. It works well for him. Combination punching works well for other fighter. His style suits him.
Throwing combinations is the BEST thing to do against ANYONE however if your style does not permit, then it can be a hindrance. The most important thing is to stay on rhythm. When you are in your flow, it is like a constant combination. You can throw one punch, dodge another and toss a few their way in sequence. It may not be 1-2-3 more like 1 dodge, 1-2 dodge and 1 dodge. The important thing is to stay in your zone, combos will come in your style if need be. I box and the zone stuff is the truth.
He hardly threw any and admitted in the post-fight interview that he needs to work on his combo punching.
Actually, I have posted a bit in the past. But the post counter must have been reset since I last posted. Granted, I have never been a frequent poster. Mostly, I am a "silent member", who reads the forums every day... Back on topic: I know Floyd's style (he is a pot shoter). But he has thrown more combinations against other fighters. And I love it when he does. The man is amazing to watch when he is on the offense.
In boxing, Floyd is an economist. He doesn't throw too many punches, much less combinations. I don't remember him throwing a single combination against JMM. Maybe he did but I did not see it as I did not expect it!:good
