How many days a week should you spar? What's the most common routine of amateur and pro fighters?

I've trained for two years and a half now and decided that I'll start competing as an amateur boxer this year. I'm good technique-wise and in shape but I obviously need sparring too to condition myself for fights and not be rusty when it comes to timing, defense and precision.

The problem is that we spar quite hard at my gym that's why I'm a bit concerned that it will affect my long term health if I do it too often. I'm a heavyweight though (as in amateur heavyweight, the 91kg/201lbs division) and most of the guys are smaller than me, I don't even feel their punches and I doubt it does much damage if they hit me, but we also have bigger guys in the gym including the current heavyweight amateur champ, he hits hard and really pushes me which is good but I wouldn't want to risk my health either. I really progress after each sparring with him but it's basically sparring at full and he's a level above me. It's always a "gym war".

I'm a bit concerned that having more than one sparring war every week on top of fighting in amateur boxing (the fights star in October, I'm probably going to have around 10 fights this season) will be a bit too much? On the other hand I don't plan to fight in the amateurs too long, just for a few years to test myself and then I'll "retire" from boxing.

I'm planning to spar once a week consider the intense sparring we have, or maybe two times here and there like once on Monday and then again on Friday.

I'd like to know what the common sparring routine of amateur fighters is? How often do professional fighters spar during their camp?

I'm training 3 days per week and doing sparring 2 of those days (not to kill, but a lot of movement, combinations, technique and many different oponents). So far it works for me and I'm kind of more complete or more adaptable to diferent situations.

Most pro fighters spar 3x per week. As an amateur you shouldn't go over that. Sparring shouldn't be a "war" every week. Sparring is for working on techniques and strategies in the ring so you prepare for competition. By going to war you aren't going to be working on those new techniques you learned rather you are going to revert to whatever was instilled in you and is instinctive. By not fighting wars doesn't mean you should have easy sparring. Sparring is practice for the big fight. You don't want to take it easy on the other guy and vise versa because that won't help for an actual bout.

My amateurs spar 2 maybe 3 times a week 1 round more than they box with 30 seconds rest, mixed between open spar and technical spars. I like to encourage them to try what we've worked on in their spars so can't always be open or better boxer gets on top and inferior one goes back to default mode. Just my opinion of course
