his amateur record is listed now as 110-10. it was said that he defeated chris byrd as an amateur but this has been proven false. another site (link below) list calzaghe as 117-1 as an amateur and in the fight he lost, the opponent's dad was the ref. bull**** again. the links from his website are also misleading. they say he was the longest reigning title holder ever in the modern era. never mind that the wbo wasn't even a recognized title when he won it and then also forget the fact that joe louis fought in what is considered the modern era. it's effing comical what has been written in these pages. joe was an excellent fighter but let's have some honesty when talking about his career. http://www.welshicons.org.uk/html/joe_calzaghe.php Early Years & Amateur Career Joe's father and trainer Enzo was born in Sardinia but spent many years living in England. When Calzaghe was two years old the family moved to South Wales, from where Calzaghe's mother hailed. Calzaghe has claimed that he was bullied at school, and, although he showed promise as a footballer, he began boxing with encouragement from his father at Newbridge Boxing Club at the age of ten. He continued boxing while attending Oakdale Comprehensive School, near his home town of Newbridge, between 1983 and 1988, winning three British Schoolboy titles. Between 1991 and 1993 Calzaghe received acclaim for winnning three consecutive British ABA titles at three sepearate weight classes; welterweight, light middleweight and middleweight. He became only the second boxer in history to win three successive ABA Titles in three different divisions, the first being Fred Webster in 1926-1928 who acheieved his hat-trick by winnning at bantamweight, featherweight and lightweight. Only one boxer took Calzaghe to the full nine minutes of a bout during this time. In the one and only loss in 117 bouts at amateur, his opponent's father was the referee. http://www.joecalzaghe.com/latest-news/calzaghe-retires-undefeated.aspx Joe Calzaghe, the undefeated former world super middle-weight champion and longest reigning world title holder in boxing history, announced his retirement on 5th February, 2009, after a professional boxing career spanning almost two decades which saw him unbeaten in 18 years as a professional and amateur boxer. http://www.joecalzaghe.com/about-joe.aspx Prior to his retirement in February 2009 as Britain's only undefeated boxing world champion, Calzaghe was the longest-reigning boxing world champion of the modern era. He has a fight record of 46-0, 32 of which by TKO. a calzaghe loss as an amateur for those of you who think he never lost. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm7qcmu7UvQ[/ame]
http://www.boxingnews24.com/2011/06/is-calzaghe-making-a-comeback/ here's more bull**** referring to the one loss as an amateur.
more bs. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/ot...ndefeated-champion-Calzaghe-quits-boxing.html Calzaghe will be remembered, also, for the special relationship with his father Enzo who, despite no boxing background, kept Joe unbeaten as amateur and professional.
I heard a story that a 14 year old Joe Calzaghe gave Floyd Mayweather Sr hell in sparring one day. To the point Floyd took off his gloves and walked out. Roger mayweather was there and could only say "remarkable! remarkable!"
yeah but that was right after floyd sr got shot. i'd believe that a 14 yr old calzaghe would have given floyd sr trouble more than i'd believe that roger used the work "remarkable."
I've seen Calzaghe's dvd he said he lost his first ever fight and one time he was beaten so bad he ended up in hospital. So there's another two loses for you.
Its funny How people on here count his reign as the WBO title holder when no other body recognized that piece of trash at the time. the ranked a dead guy for four months christ sake!
Calzaghe said in his auto bio he beat Byrd, they were in the same weight, I can believe it. I believe he said he was 100-10 as an amateur. If you actually had the reading comprehension of a 10 year old you'd understand that unbeaten for 18 years pro/am is reffering to the fact he went on an unbeaten run towards the end of his amateur career, not that he never lost at all as an amateur.
I think this guy's a troll tbh. And no ******, Joe Louis's era isn't considered modern era and yes the WBO title was considered a title when Joe won it dum dum.
Another fake/misleading story: a shot Hopkins beat prime Calzaghe. When in real world a past prime Calzaghe beat a past prime Hopkins.
the wbo title was definitely considered a title when Joe had it, it was simply new back then, the equivalent of the new IBU one now thats largely seen as worthless at the top level, but is still a minor acheivement to win. WBO was gaining credit during the EUbank and Joe years.
