I asked that question before, this is what Joe fans told me he didnt represent his country because he didnt want to be trained by anyone but his father, fact is he didnt win **** outside of Britain in amateur ranks, he did not compete in any major tournaments as an amateur so his amateur career isnt great at all...

WBO is as much of a title as the others, actually it's worth more now than the WBA and WBC. He beat Eubank for it, not some scrub, even though it was a vacant belt. Collins didn't want to fight him so it was legit. 10 year reign was legit.

Other notable titlists at the time were Reid then Woodhall WBC (Joe beat both later, Reid went on to beat Ottke),
Frankie Liles who was stopped by Mitchell WBA (Joe beat Mitchell after Mitchell also arguably beat Ottke for WBA/IBF belts),
and Charles Brewer who lost to Ottke IBF (Joe beat Brewer who had two SD's with Ottke).
In his reign Joe also picked up the IBF belt off Lacy, the WBA and WBC belts off Kessler, both seen as the clear next best in the division at the time he fought and beat them.

Joe proved beyond a doubt he was the best SMW of his era.

 

Eubank, Benn and Collins had all fought for the WBO before Joe.

- that Calzaghe would be competitive with a prime Roy Jones

- that Calzaghe didn't spend 9 years defending his WBO title against a succession of laughable bums at home
