 this is great! the wbo 168 lb title is the most legitimate belt in the world. thanks for setting me straight. if it was so legit, why is calzaghe not mentioned once in this 2000 british documentary on roy jones. it only mentions collins, eubank and benn. joe was 3 years into his "historic" run at 168. even your own people that know the sport didn't even feel calzaghe was worth a mention. joe waited at 168 until it was safe to come out. jones and hbop had a combined age of 83 when joe fought them. it was cowardice how joe ran straight to jones after the hopkins fight. he wanted jones' name on his cv so he could fool fans like you into thinking he was a great fighter. he was good, just not great.

This has to be the dumbest argument I have read on this board in a long time. First, you say since the division is new all belts in that division have equal amount of credibility. This does two things first it shows how **** the division was being so new and no one really took it seriously. Second, it says that the Division must be looked at in a bubble, exclusive from everything else that is going on in boxing. Kmac has history right and everything you are telling yourself is a big pill of ****. The WBO was like the WBO, IBI, IBC and all the other worthless belts that were created since that point. Hell the IBF took forever to be considered a REAL belt . . . and it was only started to not be the laughing stock of boxing when the WBO came around.

The truth: Calslappy fought for a worthless trinket in a **** division and was no more than a regional champ at best (he didnt even fight Ottke so he cant even claim that really):deal

Way to duck my post kmac, it's clear you had no response.

In a new division, no title can be more legitimate than the other, when they've all been around for the same period of time :patsch

Joe wasn't being slated to fight Roy in 2000, whereas Jones had ducked Collins, Benn and Eubank already you clown.

Roy and BHop had a combined age of 83, yet you never mention that Calzaghe had a combined age of 74, he was old himself. Don't re-write history, when Joe and Roy fought, many professional boxers and members of the media picked Roy to win. Joe was 37, Roy was 38 when they fought, what followed was one of the most one sided beat downs ever witnessed on American soil.

BHop was on the best run of his career when Joe beat him :deal

You really are more stupid than I originally thought. Take a look at this fanboy

Consider that by the time Joe won his first world title against Eubank at SMW, Toney was campaigning at CW! As for Jones and Hopkins, read this,

"A teleconference was set up in my office in New York for July 30th, 2002, and on the call was myself, Don King who was in the room, Frank ****** and Bernard Hopkins' lawyer, Arnold Joseph. Along with Arnold was a woman named Linda Carter, who was there on behalf of Bernard. We asked Arnold if Bernard wanted to fight Joe Calzaghe and we asked him how much money would he want if he did. The response we got was $3million and the fight would have to take place in the United States. After a little scratching of the head, we said 'Okay, done.' Frank ****** agreed on the spot, Don King agreed and we agreed so as far as we were concerned all parties were singing off the one hymm sheet. Arnold excused himself with Linda and I can only assume it was to call Bernard. Either that day or the next day, they came with a new demand: $6million, double the sum that had been agreed, the deal blew up.....he had then and still has no desire to fight Joe Calzaghe, that much is pretty clear.

Joe gets criticised sometimes for not having fought the big-name Americans, but in this case the fault has never rested with him."

    - Jay Larkin, then Showtime TV Network's Senior Vice-President of Sports and Event Programming.

    As for Jones Jr,

6:45 in. "For 2 years Calzaghe has chased pound for pound number one Roy Jones, but to no avail".

Then look at Jones own comments

Former four-division champion Roy Jones Jr, speaking with The Sunday Times, responded to Joe Calzaghe's recent claim of chasing Jones for several years and being brushed aside. Calzaghe spoke with The Sunday Mirror and appeared to have some newfound hostility when Jones' name came up.

"I spent five or six years chasing Jones and he acted like he never even knew my name," said Calzaghe. "Suddenly, I beat Hopkins in Vegas and Jones wants to be my neighbor - it's ridiculous. If a fight with Jones made sense from a cash point of view, then it could happen, but he is notorious for asking for too much money."

Jones says that he viewed Calzaghe as a possible opponent several years ago, but at the time he saw no reason to travel to Wales to chase the fight. Now that Calzaghe is the bigger star, Jones is willing to make the fight anywhere.

“I saw Joe as a potential opponent a long time ago,” Jones said. “But I had my eyes on higher things, such as winning the heavyweight title, so it was nothing against Joe, I love everything about him. He’s a fun guy, an entertaining guy, a good person. We took some pictures together with his sons after the fight on Saturday and we’ve talked on the phone. But boxing is business. When I was the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world it wouldn’t have been smart for me to go and fight Joe.

”You don’t go to somebody else when you’re the best, they must come to you, so I wouldn’t take the risk, and why would I? Why would I meet that challenge when I’m already the best? Why would I go to your country and give you a chance to allow the powers that be to take a close decision and give it to you?"

Jones says a fight with Calzaghe is the best fight in boxing, even better than a possible rematch between Oscar De La Hoya and Floyd Mayweather Jr, scheduled for September.

“But right now this is the best fight out there, better than the Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather rematch because we all know what the outcome of that fight is going to be – another win for Floyd. You don’t know the outcome of this fight, however, so it’s a fight people are going to want to see. There’s suspense, and that’s what makes for a big fight," Jones says.

Joe wanted the big fights all along, he was avoided by prime Jones and prime Hopkins like the plague. They knew Joe could beat them and take the big money out of their pockets.

kmac once again dominated on his own thread :hi:

No, it shows how new the division is

If all the belts have been around for the same time, how can one be more prestigious than the other you clown? The WBO was good enough for Thomas Hearns, and good enough for a Hearns - Leonard unification bout :patsch

Now consider that Mitchell, Brewer and Reid were all robbed against Ottke, and Calzaghe beat all three of these guys clearly, how could Ottke be champion? Consider that Joe called out Ottke out, FW made an offer and Joe was willing to travel to Germany, how could Ottke be the real champion?

    This is too easy

Wait, people are actually being serious throwing Ottke out as a guy Joe ducked and to denegrate his career? lol, talk about desperate. Sven Ottke never fought out of Germany, robbed many fighters there. He was a side show to the division, turned out a bit of a joke who could box a bit, like Valuev to the heavies in the Klit era.

    Way to own knockout artist

Here's some more input regarding Hopkins, who wanted nothing to do with Joe from 2002-2007 turning down a fight with him a few times:

    Fantastic post Fighting Pride!

I don't understand the kind of criticism Calzaghe gets on here daily, he retired 3 years ago yet there are threads made about him every day

first off, jones was a month short of 40 when he fought joe and calzaghe was 36. check your facts before you post. yes, it was a one-sided fight except the part where joe got dropped on his ass. i think you understand joe wouldn't have stepped near a ring with jones in his prime. joe understands this as well, trust me. his own kids understand that he wouldn't beat jones at his best. see link.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/boxing/9164514.stm

"My mum, who was always too afraid to watch me fight, would be annoyed if I went back in the ring but I'm more concerned about my youngest son Connor.
"He came into my dressing room before the Roy Jones fight crying his heart out because he saw me get knocked down against Bernard Hopkins a couple of months earlier.
"He had also spent the Jones build-up watching footage of Jones' glory years, when he was at his peak, on You Tube.
"Connor was sobbing 'dad, he is amazing' and I tried to reassure him 'don't worry son, Jones isn't that good anymore.'
"So while I was supposed to be psyching myself up for a huge fight on the pads and getting into my 'zone,' I had to give my little boy a hug to stop him crying.
"Then in the first round, Jones knocked me down which didn't help - Connor couldn't watch it. I can't put him through that again.

    jones was ducking collins?

kmac you seem upset that a washed up Joe Calzaghe dominated Jones :lol

    Have a look;

I can provide more. Calzaghe was completely feather fisted, and didn't stop Jones. That fight was a pure boxing contest, and what followed was one of the most one sided beatdowns ever witnessed on American soil

Joe didn't want to fight prime Jones?

the only thing upsetting is that a fighter like calzaghe who hid from any real competition his whole career got a chance to put a fighter like jones on his resume. calzaghe reminds me of the joaquin phoenix character in gladiator when he stabs russell crowe before the battle. you know, i know, and joe knows roy would have handled him easy if they were both at their best. that's why joe wanted the fight. it sounds like this victory has given you a reason to live which is good as well. i know you brits are very slim on great fighters so it's nice you got one that was manufactured to make you proud.

Kmac is quoting a child of about 13, worried about his father going into a boxing match and a father trying to assure his son.:patsch.

Seems Knockout Artist and Fighting Pride have totally dominated this thread and schooled the ignorant.

Kmac has been worried about Calzaghe for a while, but one thing I would note about Calzaghe as an amateur, is that he was never stopped, knocked down or took a standing count
