If you have any newspapers or anything other sources about this subject I would love to see them. thanks in advance.
He was apparently showing signs in his last fight, against Jabez White. I don't think he could have been before that.
There were rumours about his health in the lead-up to the second Nelson fight. It was reported that a doctor had told him to start sleeping in the open air which was typical of the advice given to people with TB. Certainly he was showing symptoms by the time of his final fight - the referee said that immediately beforehand he had such a severe coughing fit that it looked like the fight would have to be cancelled. According to this article from August 1908 people had been noticing something wrong as early as March of that year. https://ibb.co/SygHbzK
Good work! Starting with the Robson fight on April 1, 1908, that makes at least five fights that he fought with TB prior to his death.
Christ. The Old Master really had something special to continue in the condition he must have been in. Does anyone have good reading recommendations on Joe Gans?
I would also be interested in learning about any good Gans books. @McGrain started a series on every Joe Gans title fight and I thought it was really good. https://tss.ib.tv/boxing/featured-b...s-lightweight-title-fight-part-1-frank-erne-1
