Boxing as we know it was only popular in the UK, Australia, and the United States in the nineteenth century, barely an international sport. It wouldn't compare to the more popular sports of Cricket, Tennis, Golf, and Racing.

Athletes like Young Tom Morris, Donald Dinnie, Fred Archer, Isaac Burns Murphy, Mensen Ernst, would likely be more well known. And before the 19th century, guys like William Marshal victor of 500 tourney's would be well known throughout Europe. Or in the second century AD Gaius Appuleius Diocles, the charioteer, would have been famous throughout the Roman Empire.

If you've known Bunce that long you should know him well enough to know that what I've posted is pretty spot on.

So, you've answered that part of my original post...care to address the rest - in a curteous manner?

Just because my opinion doesn't match with yours, I think it's a bit rude to dismiss another poster's opinion as "total rubbish" - don't you think?

I agree with a lot of your post, but Mace took it to the next level. Boxing was as mainstream a sport as there was until the late 19th Century...

If you showed their photos to the man in the street today,I very much doubt any of them would be recognized.

It's Ali and Tyson. By a million miles. They're the two names that are well-known not just in the UK and US, but everywhere else too by non-boxing fans. My mum knows who those 2 are for god's sake, and she doesn't know who anybody is! End thread.
