Boxed from ages 8-16, did pretty well.

I had to fight older kids as I was deemed to have a unfair weight advantage over kids my age (naturally stocky since early age).

I had power and stamina, but ****ing no real skills or speed, I either clobber you or you box my head off!

I quit once my dad got involved, never got on with him, and he was pushing me to breaking point. I was weight training at ten for ****s sake, he told me to beat up kids in school to stay on edge! If I didn't wanna do it, he referred me as a 'poof'.

In the end, I just thought **** it! So I quit and went to art college and now I'm a freelance illustrator!

Havn't spoke to my dad in six years.

Done the training about 3-4 years back and I had 8 amateur fights at 175 pounds, won 5 lost 3 but gave it up about a year ago.

I'm a fan of boxing and only recently found this site amongst others, i've done boxing classes/ sparred got the heavy bag in the garage and think its an amazing sport!
I was never allowed to get involved when i was younger but really would love a pop at it now. I mostly run and found that boxing goes hand in hand, i've seen major improvements in all my running times since regularly 'boxing' training. Its good to see the pro's mixing with the rest.:good

I'm gonna start boxing next month. Hopefully, I can catch and beat Floyd Mayweather when he's about 40 and become a WBC diamond champion. It's been my lifelong dream.

I'm just a fan, I wish i had the guts to go to a boxing gym but I think I would just be embarrassed as I'm not the biggest or toughest by any means!

Love watching it though, unbelievable balls to get in a ring in front of millions of people worldwide for those that reach those heights!

Funny how people haven't been brought up with the sport, what makes you a fan of the sport? To me boxing doesn't get the credit it deserves as a sport. You have to be physically and mentally on top of your game at all tones during training/fighting. I think I mental side and boxers capabilities mentally are very underrated and misunderstood.

No idea why I do it. Noone's forcing me I just love everything about boxing. Actually training and fighting shows you how impressive the pros are. Couple years ago I would look at punchstats and see 700 thrown over 12 rounds and think "That's all, these guys should train harder".:-(

Just an armchair fan. Would love to join a gym and do some training, then maybe some sparring as I have 'moved up a few divisions' in the last few years .

But I'm quite shy anyway, and don't get enough time with work/kids etc. so it will never happen.

i did when i was around 15, just as headgear came in....i was pretty crap really and had no power at all...i was around 10 stone 3 most of the time....was trained at a club by jackie turpin, former british featherweight champ and brother of world champ randy turpin who beat sugar ray, thats my best memory of it.....and my regret, not having a photo with jackie, as he died in last couple of years...nowadays i take photos of everything with a phone, but them days (mid 80's) taking photos in a casual snapping way wasn't commonplace like today

i'd like to get involved with a club here...an old pro lives in my street (who fought for wbc international title in the 90's) and we tried to get a club going but red tape and bull**** put the clappers on it...as well as local hall not wanting holes drilled for bags and insisting everything be free-standing..altogether it became arkward

I started at 50 at a white collar gym. Never hit anyone in my life before and now love sparring, but only with someone i trust to oversea it ! Nothing better to teach you about yourself than going into a ring and just having to deal with what comes at you.

I tried it out, 15 years later I had my last bout after fighting amateur and pro. I had a well know manager and fought out of one tough stable. Got to fight in a large arena a few times on tv and stuff. It was an interesting ride.

Mate - I'm 31, 5'11", and nearly 85kg (and not in a good way... the Michellin man envys my curves, if you get me) - and in my last sparring I was literally picked up during a clinch and thrown (as in completely off the floor) across the ring. Only the middle rope stopped it from being like the scene in Rocky where he launches Hulk Hogan out.

tl;dr : I am NOT the biggest or toughest guy by any means!

Best advice I ever read was along the lines of: No-one in a good gym will laugh at you for being fatter/weaker/less-skillful... they'll laugh at you for being that way and not wanting to improve.

Nearly 9 weeks of training (only one hour a week) and I'm already seeing improvements in confidence, weight, ability, etc........ obviously not counting the flying lessons..... :nut

If you have a good place near you, I'd suggest giving it a go.

"I do not regret the things I've done, but those I did not do"

Spot on mate, anyone at a real gym aren't there to judge you. Exactly what i like about the training. Everyone is at different stages and aiming for similar goals. I hate the public gyms full of posers between 7 and 9, thats me judging but its a fact.
