How many historians ranked Jeffries #1, up to 1940?

    Exactly how "widely" reported, though? Surely if it was widely reported, his championship record would say so?

    I really could not say only that when I was at the Hall of Fame I did a little digging around and that's what I found (well what they told me) perhaps Appolak's book will shed more light, though I doubt it.

    This is getting like those American Championships ,promoted by DK,where favoured fighters got ranked with fictional fights on there record.Jeffries retired in 1904 after the Munro debacle,Berger didnt turn pro till 1906 ,had two fights one of which he lost to Kaufman and retired.One minute Jeffries is lauded for beating ranking fighters while a novice with only a handful of fights ,the next thread about him has 3 or 4 more fights tacked on ,there is no concrete evidence that he fought either Berger or the other names being bandied about .
