You should look up Jeffries tale of the tape. He was bigger than Povetkin in just about every area, and had less body fat on him.

I think Povetkin pretty good, but I am a tad surprised with the amount of classic posters voting for him to beat 16 or more past lineal champions. That's how I see it.

My nickname for Fury would be the loon. The guy's mentally unstable.

    Nicknames were better decades ago.

I used to think George Foreman was called the Mummy but that was just Ali making fun of him. Isn't Shannon Briggs nickname now 'Lets go Champ!'? :D

I doubt he would beat Liston, but everybody except Louis before that... yeah, I'll go with that.

Shannon the Cannon. I actually met him a while back and shook hands.

I'm a pretty big man, but next to Briggs not a chance.

Briggs has to have 15" or larger fists, a 20" or greater neck, and cinder block for a head.

He does like the fans though. Lennox Lewis said he was the best puncher he fought.

Potvetkin is a top ten contender in a era of 40 or more top ten contenders. He is not beating prime Liston.

Since footage pre Johnson is sparse I never consider these fighters. Since Johnson he may or may not have beaten a handful of champions. Five or less.

I would say he beats the usual suspects:

    James "Buster" Douglas Buster 1990
    Michael Moorer Double M 1994
    George Foreman Big George 1994-1997
    Shannon Briggs The Cannon 1997-1998
    Hasim Rahman The Rock 2001

I would love to see him in wars with Holyfield and Bowe. Maybe he takes 1 in a Trilogy.

Povetkin is begging for uppercuts but so far has not faced anybody talented enough to adminsister him one.

For that reason he loses to Tokyo Douglas. Tyson back then was still better than Povetkin who is good but has only one predictable pattern of attack to his entire game.
Come forward jab , dip to the side , left hook , right hand. Rince and repeat systematically over and over and over.

He would have lost to Tackam if his beast pellets didn't give him a late surge Adrenalin burst.

Actually something to note is Tackam was cleanly out boxing Povetkin by wide up until 5-6th round. Totally controlled him with movement and a jab. Made him miss his hooks by miles.

WK couldn't produce a similar performance for even a 60 second stretch over 12 rounds.
    Something to think about :eyebrow2:

    That is a bold prediction.

He is a very good contender, but he is also very beatable.

Beating a prime Liston, not likely, but few would.

Calling Povetkin a mere contender is harsh. I think he'd beat 16-20 past lineal champions.

As for Johnson, he's on plenty of film to grade. I think the films help Johnson because he's in there vs much smaller, older / rusty, and medicare types until he meet Willard.

If Johnson vs. Hart, Johnson vs. O' Brien or Johnson vs. Jim Battling was filmed and viewable today, I'm pretty sure his stock would take a hit.

Jack Johnson vs. Jim Battling Johnson is rumored to be filmed and out there.

Povetkin had all he could handle with an alphabet cruiser champ Huck, so it casts a bit of doubt of success against the smaller heavyweight champs. He fares better with the bigger targets it seems. Pity about the Wilder fight.
Yes, The Louisville Lip had his own unofficial names for his opponents. Apart from the two already mentioned, he called Sonny, The Big Ugly Bear and Joe, The Gorilla. It was okay though, it seems, he said it with a smile.

Johnson was rated as the greatest of all hwt champions and is rated very highly over 100 years after he lost his title. You cannot throw away all that history no matter how hard you try. Povetkin is not winning a round vs prime Jack Johnson.

Povetkin, 10 years from now won't be remembered as anything but a contender in an era when almost everyone was a contender.

why is it harsh when its what he IS? at best.

Why is it that as soon as any old turnip gives a klithscko a hard time that you want to turn contenders into some ATG killer?

if you want to talk about amateur ranks its different, he was a great amateur alongside amateur fraudley harrison and perhaps better than amateur AJ.

It's harsh that a fraud like Wilder, who has no intention of defending his belt vs. anyone in the top ten, refuses to fight Povetkin. Instead, Wilder targets top 20-45th ranked type of guys.

Boxing history if you are familiar with is full of top fighters who never achieved lineal status.

I do believe Povetkin would have defeated Wlad in 2015, but he fought in 2013. Since the defeat, Povetkin has five KO's in a row.

His resume has a few guys that were given title shots recently in ( Wach, and Duhaupas ) Povetkin beat them more convincingly than the champions have.
