Marciano hade more courage and toughness in his LEFT NUT, than tyson has in his whole being. Marciano woulda destroyed Mike.

Marciano would stop Tyson and for the most part it boils down to intestinal fortitude

Where was the analogous 5-10, 185 lbs, stumpy-limbed slugger who gave Tyson one iota of trouble from 1985 to 2000? Seriously. And please don't give me the line that Marciano would have fought at 210. With his reach, short legs, narrow build and long torso, that extra weight would only go one place. Your only option is to declare Marciano a physical freak that only occurs once every few decades.

I just don't see Marciano having the physical tools to outbully the bully.

And for everyone who wants to bring up The Rock's undefeated record, please remember that if Tyson's career was as long as Marciano's, he would have retired with only one defeat, and he would have fought a string of giants that are nowhere to be found on Marciano's record.

Then why is it Marciano naturally weighed well over 200lb and had to cut down to weigh 185lb? I don't see any reason with modern nutrition/steroids/supplements/weigh training he could not look like other 5'10 fighters david tua and mike tyson. The man was very big boned. He could look like a little hulk if you steroided him up like todays fighters. In your other point, I do think he was a physical freak when it came to strength for his size, which would allow him to compete with a lot of big men. I think the best big men defeat Marciano, but only the best.

I don't see Marciano beating Tyson either

What giants were around during Marciano's time for him to fight? That's not fair to critisize him for if their were none around. He arguably fought the best skilled big man of his era in Joe Louis. He did miss Baker and Valdes, but both were not giants.

I am speaking only in head to head regards here. Firstly, I don't see Marciano's stubbly little limbs, already thick legs, narrow shoulders and relatively wide hips holding much more weight with our looking more like Galento and reducing his great flexibility, stamina and yes, even power.

Marciano's resume is pretty much perfect. You can argue that all the greats he fought were on the downside and contender types weren't that good (Layne, La Starza). However, as you said, he beat everyone put in front of him. That said, were Tyson to hang it up in 1992, and even more in world of supposition, were he focussed enough to fight Douglas with full preparation (a fight I believe he would win) what would we be saying about him now... or in another 10 to 20 years?

    Seamus,

    1. I am a huge Mike Tyson fan. I rate him very highly. In fact, if I were top make a head to head list, he would be in my top 4 heavyweights of all time.

    2. If Tyson were to hang it up in 1992, I believe he would be rated higher today by most fans. The holyfield fights in 96-97 killed his legacy and more importantly his aura of invisibility. The Lennox Lewis fight damaged his legacy slightly because now Lewis fans scream Tyson would have never beaten Lennox. Tyson has an 0-3 record vs Holyfield and Lewis, despite not being anywhere near his prime. Had he never returned to the ring in 1995, fans of his could say "He would have whupped Lennox, Bowe, Holyfield had he returned" and their wouldn't be that 0-3 stain on his record. He wouldn't have gone down as Mike Tyson, the "Biter, Cheater, Dirty fighter, Filthy mouth in public".

    3. Had Tyson avenged the Douglas defeat then retired in 1992, it would really help his legacy and he would go down as one of the best ever. He still wouldn't go top 3 because "he never beat the big three in the 1990s" but you could also say he never lost to them either.

Most people that knew Marciano say he was 5"11 and I am talking about people who stood next to him, It is still short for a heavyweight even in his day.

Most People who stood next to Tyson said he was 5"10, but I don't think it makes a difference.

Tyson fought in the 200 minus division when he went to the box-offs and lost to Henry Tillman but as a pro put on 15-20lbs of muscle

Because of his behavior change in many instances many people feel Tyson benefited from modern muscle enhancers as did Evander....Had Tyson been fighting in the 50's like Marciano he would not have those enhancers available..Had Marciano been fighting in the 90's he would have had the benefits of those muscle enhancers

Man to Man, Tyson only once stopped a man after the 8th rd. and never, ever ever got off the floor to win....Marciano overcame a split nose and got off the floor to win....I think highly of Tyson but can not discount these facts and differences...

Tyson was a strong factor no doubt but man to man in the intestinal fortitude department Marciano is head and shoulders above him and I factor that in strongly

    Seamus,

Do you think any fighter under 190lb would beat the best version of Rocky Marciano?

Of course it is possible, especially with a guy who can get cut like Rocky... However, I have stated, and still believe, I would put money on Rocky over any sub-190 pounder who ever lived. He was a phenom, and yes, a physical freak.

I do not buy the argument that Marciano could put on more weight to greater effectiveness. Tyson, though about the same height, has a larger frame than Marciano. Tyson was a freak of nature at 13, already putting large numbers on the bench press (250?, I forget the exact number) and already weighing 200 pounds.

Bummy, if this fight was tomorrow somehow I doubt you'd put a nickle on Rocky. This is pure fantasy.

Wow 47% of classic posters favour Marciano. :scaredas:

I think Rocky is a devastating H2H monster against fellow Sub-200lb Heavyweights, but this is a different story entirely.

Marciano walks right thru Tyson. Too much courage, too much durability.

  14. Marciano walks right too Tyson and realizes Tyson is black and then runs... If Marciano walked to Tyson and tried to fight he would be blown away in 30 seconds Top.
