Let me put this to you another way how many of his wins were over opponents who generally weighed 175 lbs or more? Will that satisfy the pedant in you?
Sullivan and Kirlain are his best wins above that limit. He also drew with Sharkey and Jackson. Very thin resume, but not close to the worst ever among lineal HW champions.
He beat 2 Sullivan and Kilrain .Sullivan was a washed up alcoholic 34 years old who hadn't fought for 3 1/2 years.Corbett ran away for the first 12 rounds, until Sullivan's legs began to go, and then upped the ante. Smart tactics .
Even if you completely downgrade Sullivan win (which is not easy, because John lost only once - against Corbett), Kirlain was still very good fighter.
Corbett would have danced around Holy, using his old time skills to befuddle the slower, bigger man, and then he'd counter-punch the daylights out of him. Holy never fought anybody like Corbett
That is kind of like asking how many men over 200 lbs Rocky Marciano beat. the number was irrelevant at the time!
Not at all. Marciano beat lots of heavyweights .Corbett beat 2 men who were over the light heavyweight limit. And if you are going to match Corbett against HEAVYWEIGHTS as we know the term from the birth of the lightheavyweight division onwards, you need to examine how many HEAVYWEIGHTS he actually beat, and the answer is 2. However inconvenient it might be to admit it!
Was the LHW division in existence during his tenure as champion? If not the 175 cut off seems a bit obscure. But either way, I'd have to buy Pollacks book to know, my knowledge on the era is thin.
