    Larry Holmes vs Quinn Navarre

    1 Holmes 10-8 knockdown
    2 Navarre
    3 Holmes 10-8 standing 8 count
    4 Holmes
    5 Navarre
    6 Holmes
    7 Navarre
    8 Navarre
    9 Navarre
    10 Holmes

    95-93 Holmes

So i've been waiting to see this fight for a long time, because i heard it was one of Holmes's closest and toughest fights in his 2nd career. I thought Holmes done enough with the 2 point rounds to win a close but clear decision, but i have to say there was a few calls from the referee that i questioned.

In the 3rd round Holmes may of been lucky to not a have knockdown called against him, it could of been a case of Holmes's tripping over Navarre's feet but it was definitely borderline. Then in the same round Holmes stunned Navarre and whilst Navarre was in the corner Holmes continued his assault, but Navarre was throwing back at the same time then all of sudden the referee calls it a standing 8 count ? i thought that was quite bizarre call considering Navarre was throwing back at the time.

Then another call in the 6th round Holmes appeared to knockdown Navarre with a right hand on top of the head, Navarre's gloves definitely touched the canvas and i thought Holmes should of got credited for another knockdown.

Overall it was a decent competitive fight with a few entertaining moments, and a few dubious calls from the referee. Navarre's best moments were in the 2nd half of the fight when he at times out jabbed the old master. But Holmes overall still had enough left in the tank with his famous left jab, and occasional right uppercut and right hand to get the job done in a close but clear win for Holmes.

The 2nd Spinks fight. I thought Holmes edged it.

I though he edged Spinks (second fight) and McCall but i wouldn't say they were robberies.

As I recall, I had Holmes winning the rematch with Michael Spinks, but I haven't seen it since the night it aired. Many have said he should have beaten Oliver McCall, but I don't recall that fight as a robbery. From what I remember, Larry was lazy in that fight and McCall outhustled him. I might have to give that fight another watch.

You're correct Holmes was winning the fight, when McCall was doing his strange posturing around the ring not looking interested during middle rounds. Then the old man tired out and McCall found some motivation, to outhustle Holmes in later rounds to earn a close by deserved win IMO.

To this day I still can not understand why anybody would score for Spinks in Holmes - Spinks II

Sigh, that sums it up. It was pretty thrilling after the first half of both the Holyfield and McCall fights, I had Larry ahead on both.

In the case of the McCall fight, things really turned as of the 9th round and Larry lost it from there. I don't think it was laziness at all, just a pretty darn old boxer whose time ran out.

Only round I disagree on is the 7th, as I thought Larry pulled it off with some nice and heavy jabs.

Overall I thought Navarre was duped by the crowd into thinking he won the fight, to me there was no doubt. He did stay nice and busy and landed some fine shots, but Holmes' were more effective and he blocked the vast majority of what Navarre threw.

I'd say the rematch with Spinks was a robbery. It was the best example I can think of when someone says it was close but clear....Larry certainly won that fight.

I felt Holmes won. I had him taking 5 of the first 6 rounds. In the second half of the fight, I gave him rounds Eight and Ten. 115-113 Holmes.

I do wonder a bit if he'd managed to cut back down to 215, if he'd been able to win back a title at old age. His skills never were the problem when old. He'd kept enough to be a champ. Just didn't seem to be able to keep up the pace to pull it off.

Look at the Holyfield fight. He looked great and I had him ahead until he started tiring. He gave it his all that last round and was rewarded for his efforts by throwing up in the middle of the ring right after the bell.

It was age not weight. After the Witherspoon scare in which Holmes weighed 213 (Holmes believed his best weight was around 212 1/2) it was decided Holmes would never come in this light again. Futch pointed out as guys like Ali aged they had to give in to father time and come in a bit heavier as getting to their old best weight took a bit out of them. Holmes was at that age.
