He's facing Glen Johnson soon, and I was wondering about his older fights: http://www.boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_id=733&cat=boxer He has lost via split decision to Tarver, Jorge Fernando Castro (x2) and James Toney. Is his style a factor? Or was he robbed in any of these fights?
I thought the decision against Toney was fair. I had it 115-112 for Toney. Toney was hurt though in round 2, the most I've ever seen him hurt along with the Peter fight.
He was not just hurt, he was floored by Reggie and pulled a very close one in my eyes, he also was lucky not to have lost to the Body Snatcher the first time around. Actually James Toney won a split decision against Dave Tiberi which was considered a major offense and I can't believe that was just to do with boxing... Anyway, Reggie was middleweight titlist and won a split decision against Steve Collins so I can not just count his SD losses. Tough, short-armed but very good boxer, I like him.
I thought Toney won the first McCallum fight but lost the 2nd one by a point. The Tiberi fight, from what I remember, was an awful decision. I think I gave Tiberi 8 rounds, but I haven't seen it in many years. I think it was that year when I saw it, and I would think that my judging skills weren't as good at age 12 as it is now.
Judge Frank Brunete gave something like 10 rounds to 2 to Dave cause a point was deducted from Tiberi in round 6 and that is hardly conceivable in a fight which was fought at close quarters and where Toney was never hurt. The other two judges gave 7 rounds to 5 to Toney... I had McCallum winning the first bout by two points and losing the rematch by a large margin and I was 21 years old back then.
Well then Judge Frank Brunete is a moron. Toney was clearly weight drained for that fight and did lose rounds, but if you really watch it closely, he landed by far the harder, more effective shots compared to Tiberi's shoeshining. I had Toney winning by a point or two. Alex Wallau's comments and the resultant investigation were a joke. Apparently those folks had never scored a boxing match before. Oh, and Toney won the Reggie Johnson fight also. He was dropped in that fight but did enough to win.
