I'm far from a pro, but I would have probably quit to fight another day. A broken jaw is not only very painful, but the damage you could sustain with another clean hit could be so much more devastating, with potential to affect you in the future. Luckily in the amateurs, I don't have to make that decision, my coach/ref/doctor would not allow it to continue for obvious reasons.

I honestly can't say because I've never been in the situation. . Never had my jaw broken, and definitely never had it broken in a boxing match against a pretty damn solid opponent with 9 minutes of boxing left. . .

I'm leaning towards quitting, though. . . Live to fight another day. . I'm pretty sure you risk permanent disfiguration and **** by fighting with a broken jaw. . . End up looking like Natalie Portman in Goya's Ghosts after she was released from prison. . .

Unless your Paulie Malignaggi, Abraham, Ali, etc. then you can't say ****. . .

I'm pretty sure most of these keyboard warriors have never even sparred before. . . never even taken a punch from some noob.

If my job and earning potential was so drastically impacted by the decision, I would lift up the guard, tighten up the D and get back to work.

Good comment. I got my nose broken in sparring and I didn''t even think for a second to continue or not :) (I quit obviously). A broken jaw is much more serious and Ortiz problem is that he has very bad defense so he can not just shut the offense of Josesito and survive a couple of rounds. He'll get hit with hard right hands over and over. That said I really think that Lopez would've continued in the same situation because he doesn't have the money so he doesn't have a choice.

So a fighter should be willing to die in the ring? That's stupid. What's on the line? We aren't talking about fighting a war here. This isn't someone fighting to save their families or country. It's boxing, which is essentially a sport/game, like football, darts, synchronised swimming or Halo. If you really are willing to die in the ring then you're a fool. It means you prioritise your own ego over your family and friends, who I can't imagine would be too thrilled about their friend, son or father dying in a boxing match because they're 'a fighter'

Ahh ****. Didn't read the thread properly and answered:

It's hard to say as I've never stepped in a professional ring before.

Yet still you think YOU have the right to call a professional fighter who has dedicated all his life to a sport he loves a quitter, oh the irony.

I personally have had my jaw broken in 3 places in a fight.
First - I thought his jaw injury happened in the 7th.
Ortiz and his corner did the correct thing in stopping the fight. Ortiz couldn't close his mouth.

    Other than that.
Uh - Lopez took hella shots. With so many people testing positive it makes me wonder.

I would fight on for the payday. But if I had Ortiz's track record I would have to fight on just for honor.

Your theory don't add up considering floyd has fought with an injured rotator cuff and also has fought on having broken his hands in several of his fights.:good

I bet you'd quit your job because you got injured and let your family suffer?

It's called having heart. You can't quit when people depend on you to win.
