Won't quit even without the payday. If I was Ortiz, my jaw being broken rules me out of the Canelo fight anyways. I'd go out, do my best to avoid punches and close the show.

I can't question fighters for quitting after injury because it can potentially ruin a career. If Ortiz makes a comeback and becomes a contender again, I would say he made the right decision.

Also, how was Ortiz suppose to know he was up on the scorecards? He couldn't have known and if he just ran and gave away rounds, he was going to lose anyways making his decision to continue a stupid one.

For the person who compared boxing to firefighters, slap yourself. Firefighters saves other people's lives. Of course dying is worth it if it means saving someone's life. Dying in the ring so some keyboard warriors can't call you a quitter is incredibly stupid.

Exactly, if a fighter gets permanently injured he has no one to blame but himself. So why should we criticize for trying to avoid permanent injury? Are the fans going to support a boxer if he can no longer box and support himself due to getting injured in the ring?

go back and watch the video. if his mouth was closed....he wouldn't have suffered that broken jaw. i agree...he needs to tuck the chin.

I know his mouth is open, like I said he is one that makes noises when he throws shots, kinda grunts them shots out like the Amateurs do. But had his chin been tucked he may not have got that jaw broke either thats what I am saying its a mix of the two, his mouth being open yes but his chin not being tucked is also a factor here that contributed to it.

If you don't need the money and don't hate Lopez, I think it's a lot easier to throw in the towel and preserve your career.

As for the people saying Ortiz will not have 'made it' to the cANELO fight with a broken jaw. There is no way he knew that during the fight.

I would quit, when something is broke getting it hit over and over again isn't going to fix it.

In my experience, I have to say I almost certainly would not quit.

I have 2 (separate, different)documented cases of completing a work day with injured body parts that were later diagnosed as a breakage/fracture.

Fractured thumb once and a fractured ulna(cracked elbow) once. This was while doing heavy delivery/driving work, alone.

    Ya I believe you.
I believe a lot of the people that say they wouldn't have quit. People way under estimate the pain threshold of fighters.
That being said, it depends on the situation.

If you are in serious need of the Canelo Pay day, you would have slug it out. For people that say 'OH WELL he won't have been ready for the fight anyways'. You don't think that far ahead when you are in the ring, all you know is 'win this- get pay day' you don't think beyond that.

Ortiz made good money and he does not seem like he wastes it. He is probably secure and don't feel the need to risk his career.

Stupid question, at least 90 % here would quit from a broken nose or knocked out tooth. Very few people are willing to risk serious injury, our survival instinct is programmed to operate on a risk vs reward ratio

Majority of people only like fighting if they are winning, they fold as soon as they start losing and try to escape with minimal damage

Broken jaw is a serious injury, you're jaw will be wired shut for weeks and you will be paying 1000's of $ in medical expenses.... Good luck trying to explain that to you're superiors unless you are working at McDonalds....

To answer you're question, Id predict that if I was aware that my jaw was broken, I would immediately stop fighting...

However adrenaline and anger make people do stupid things, so I can't be sure of what I would choose to do when under the influence of those chemicals

Good paragraph, but you are making the mistake of using the examples of 'non-boxers' and their situations.
Of course a college kid will quit asap if he got into a fight at the bar. Of course a lawyer will quit asap if a trail goes wrong and some guy jumps out and smash his jaw in.

But if you are a champion boxer and have a multi-million dollar pay day coming up, or if your boxing legacy is on the line. That's totally different situations.

I like how most of Esb put themselves in hero positions making all these claims how tough they would be..

Its alot of pain, but you gotta return the favor man. Money or none. Had my jaw dislocated before more than once, bloodied and cut, but if your not laid out or stopped no reason to stop.

I only used the non-boxer examples because I am not a boxer. I've had a handful of am-fights but I don't believe that qualifies me as a boxer. Therefore, I would think it frivolous and akin to mental masturbation to pretend that I am "Victor Ortiz". He is more athletic and dedicated then I will ever be. My 2 cents are basically useless

What I find amusing is the dissonance of the real world and this forum...

In the real world, most people don't even want to fight. It comes down to a factor of worrying about you're job, going to jail, getting hurt ect....
Yet put someone on an internet forum, and all of a sudden they become Rocky Marciano
