Thoroughly enjoyed it - stayed up til 4am drinking & playing poker with a few friends to watch it, then had to sober up and catch a plane to New York. If only every Saturday night could be like that.

Good fight but the gravity of it made it a great occasion, but aside from the knockout there wasn't that much action

I'm watching the replay right now, and sorry Hatton fans - but Cortez's involvement in the fight didn't really favor Mayweather. Hatton's so called "inside fighting" consists of mauling is opponent into the ropes, and then he tries to smother his opponent's punches using his upper body while throwing hooks. He doesn't really HOLD and hook as many people like to describe it ("Hook and Hold Hatton"), he smothers and hooks. He was not able to do this in his fight with Floyd NOT because of Cortez but because of Floyd. When Hatton came within range to do this, FLOYD tied him up. When both fighters have their arms wrapped up and cannot punch, the ref must break the action up. If a fighter has his arm (or arms) wrapped around the other fighter's, te action needs to be broken up. Its really that simple.

The only thing Cortez can be criticized for in that fight is one of the following:

    1) Not penalizing Floyd for all the holding.

    2) Not keeping a better eye on what Hatton was doing in terms of possible rabbit punching, when he did it, and when he did NOT do it.

Cortez has no effect on the outcome of the fight. When Hatton tried to come on the inside, Floyd either checked him with the straight right or the left hook. When they DID fight on the inside, Floyd easily landed punches while Hatton couldn't do anything. Floyd even landed combinations on the inside of straight punches - which if any of you understand the intricacies of in-fighting know can only be done if a fighter is completely in control.

If Cortez had not broken the action, I think the only difference is the fight would have ended SOONER. Floyd would have been forced to fight at a higher pace, and as he is in better condition than Hatton I think he would have changed his game plan to attacking instead of just trying to catch Hatton coming in. And we all saw what happened when Floyd went on the offensive in that fight - Hatton had NO response for it and Floyd easily landed many, hard punches on Hatton.

And as is obvious by what happened in round 9.... if Hatton was really bothering Floyd, Floyd could just keep him outside and unable to engage Floy by jabbing him for the duration of the fight. When Floyd decided to use the jab to the HEAD as a part of his game plan in round 9 Hatton could do nothing to stop it. His defense and head movement had nothing to do with it, Floyd's hand speed was just so much better than Hatton's reaction time... that Hatton didn't even have time to react before Floyd landed.

I enjoyed the fight, but it doesn't merit a rematch.

I couldn't agree more. Hatton is a very good fighter. Mayweather is better. The question going into the fight was whether or not Mayweather could cope with Hatton's swarming style. Now we know. He could.

There's nothing else to know about this matchup and a second fight would just result in a quicker win for Mayweather. Both fighters have excellent fights out there for them. The fights for Mayweather are obvious, but Hatton is still the best there is at 140. If boxing was run in a remotely sensible way, we would now be seeing the two try to clear out their divisions.

Yeah it was pretty good. I think if Floyd didn't finish it with a KO I would have viewed it differently.
