How many of you are fed up with the current boxing scene?

I'm probably a lot younger than yourself, I've watched boxing seriously since early-mid 2000s, and a few of lewis, calzaghe fights in the late 90s. This is my era, I haven't got much compare it too, I wasn't about in the 70s or 80s. But I'd rather watch some live fights in colour and HD than watch a classic fight on a jittery black and white picture, even in if it's of Lower standard of boxing that was around 20, 40 or even 80 years ago.

 

GGG is just one fighter. No one wants to fight him as he's knock both Cotto and Mayweather out.

I suggest you focus on the light heavyweight division. It's loaded with old and young talent.

 

I think boxing would be wise to follow NASCAR's example. NASCAR has made what (to my eyes) is an extremely boring sport into a hugely profitable mainstream attraction through brilliant marketing.

When championship fights went from 15 to 12 rounds some people thought it was a good thing because fans didn't have the patience to watch 15 rounds. But if fans have the patience to watch a long NASCAR race they can sit through a 15 round championship fight.

Boxing isn't run or marketed properly. It's treated as a niche sport, The people in power don't seem to have any kind of long-term vision nor any sense of, or respect for, boxing history.

 

I agree with Burt and Cobra. Boxing needs to return to what made it great. It's mostly about making the most money against the softest opponent to avoid a loss on the record. Fighters in the past wanted to fight the best opponents. They risked getting a loss to show they were the best. The fighters of yesteryear fought more often. They had to in order to remain in contention and not fall off the boxing map. It's hard to follow a fighter who fights once a year, or maybe twice a year. You lose interest, especially young people today with their fast paced world and short attention spans. plus this **** about 3 champs per division and umpteen weight divisions has to go. Who's the damn champ? Give me the days when there were 8 weight classes with 1 champ in each and you could watch a championship fight on TV on a Friday night instead of shelling out 60 big ones to watch a lackluster game of tag you're it. Well enough of my rant. I'll go back to SweetFights.com and watch the old timers now.

 

I like the 15 round idea, and certainly we'd all be better off with only 1 alphabet organization. But with respect to weight divisions while I think 8 is too few, for the reasons McGain spelled out, in the lower divisions, I don't think you need a different weight division every 4lbs or so. That's why you have 6 weight class champs etc.

As for the OP's question, I don't really pay to watch boxing, but do watch all the free boxing I can and boxing is boxing. If a fight is competitive it doesn't matter to me whether I'm watching a new fighter or a fighter of yesteryear. A new fighter is better in the sense that you can watch his career unfold before your eyes.

 

I'd like a return to the eight traditional divisions.
Obviously one world champion in each would be amazing.

 

Fighters should have to weigh in the afternoon of the fight too.

It's ridiculous with all these weight divisions and weigh-ins happening 36 hours before the fight or whatever. You have fighters weighing two or three divisions higher than advertised.
