A bunch. The real estate in the south end is very expensive. You have to figure on rent, insurance, licenses, maintenance, salaries, equipment, heat, water.... I'd have to have enough to live on and I'd need enough to hire a chief trainer and assistant. I wish I could buy the whole building. See if you can take the "virtual tour" of the joint as is. The gym would be located down the stairs. The club fights would be held in a regulation sized ring on the left at bottom on Friday nights, and training in the afternoons at right. http://beehiveboston.everyscape.com/#p=1129313&y=209.27&pi=0 I can see heavy bags swinging, Greb and Norfolk on the wall. They'd even be space to have study halls for the kids to do homework first, show it to me or a trainer and pay no membership fee.
Oh my God, that is one of the funniest posts ever written here! Man did you have the awful luck in that one.
:good:good:good +1 The area I grew up in was rough (for Australian standards) and while all the kids in there were training they could not be out making trouble. Another point is that a lot of these kids do not have a father figure at home, or at school , so having a tough no noseanse trainer will serve them well. Better than looking up to the older kids who they hang around. I am sure all of ESB wishes it works out for you Stonie.
Here! Relaxation, self-knowledge and self-control are lessons I have consolidated in the gym. A boxer uses his whole body, not just his hands. Balls help make a good chin. Boxing --as life-- is a game of inches and split-seconds. Make physics your ally. I love the jab!
BOxed off and on from 8 until 18 but had most of my fights between ages 15-17 Had last fight at 20. Went 15-3 fighting at super Lw and later at Welter. Trained again in my early 30s but just briefly, i ended up drinking more beer with my trainer more than working out LOL!!! I originally trained at Hollenback gym (Al Stankie) Bennys Jet Center(Pete "Sugarfoot"Cunningham) and later Benny Urquidez,Blinky Rodriguez (all kickboxing legends who also happened to be very good boxers). Had last fight in Job corps in Utah remember Gene Fullmer was there as an honarary guest. At the end trained with my buddy Efren Chavez who fough Johnny Tapia to a draw. Would like to train again to sharpen my skills up again, but i dont have time just lift weights now.
Haha, the Amish comment never escapes anybody... Right now the only gym in Lancaster is a "keep kids off the streets" kinda of gym. They never really seem to promote taking boxing any further than that. There's also Nye's Gym where I saw Kermit Cintron (he's from Reading) train. This was before his move for some Kronk help...which didn't really seem to help in his last stinker. This is unless Steward was teaching him the basics of "jumping out of the ring" defense...then he nailed it...
"It doesn't take a man to stand there and get your head beat off!" "It's better to give than to receive." I show up at a San Isidro/Talpita gym here in Guadalajara, where "La Cobrita" González learned his trade, as well as at "Mr. Cardona's" gym up the hill from Polanco.
Stonehands, this is a great idea and it looks like you have given it considerable thought. Kudos to you as the sport (kids too) need more honourable guys like yourself. Just out of curiousity, have you considered maybe approaching someone with this, someone wealthy with a boxing background who would want to give a bit back? Could anyone on here put a word in someones ear, maybe do a bit of asking around?
That's been recommended to me before, but I'm just not that type. I wouldn't want to answer to anyone or be responsible to any'one except myself. I guess it's the fighter's mentality. I don't even watch team sports, never mind play them.
Trained and boxed a little when I was a teenager over 30 years ago in Lost Battalion Hall in Rego Park,Queens,NYC.Gave it up when reality set in as my biggest weakness was easily exposed as my ring nickname would have been "Slowhands" had I had one.
If I was rich, I'd give you the money, no strings attached. I may live on the left side of the country, but this is a great idea you have and am fascinated to see how this would work out.
I box have been doing so for around 3 years now, had quite a few fights and mostly wins, i want to take it further, but i got a 16 month old son and want to enjoy sometime with him, plus my old man has had a brain tumor and is still recovering so i help him out every now and then, once my son is abit older and my old man is doing ok, ill look to go further. i still go to the gym 2/3 times a week. its abit of a pain with my job though.
